Hatchback recommendations

Just wondering if anyone here could give me some feedback on either the Toyota Echo hatchback or the Mazda Protege5....I'm interested in getting a sporty hatchback with good fuel economy. Anyone got any pros or cons on these two models? Is Mazda still a good name given that they are now produced by Ford? Any info would be great!

I have owned a Focus and it has given me great service for more than 5 years and 188,000 kilometres, without problem. Given the fact that Mazda is a subsidary of Ford, I have no qualms about buying a Protege 5. Also, they operate independently from Ford in much of their engineering. Then again, Toyota makes great cars, too. So, it depends on your tastes and the features offered in each vehicle.
