Has anyone ever been to Australia and/or New Zealand?

If so, what's it like over there? Do they drive on the opposiite of the road like in the UK? Do toilets over there flush in the opposite direction? Is everything opposite over there? What words do they use over there that we don't use there (besides mate)? How hot are the women over there?

I'm fascinated by Australia and I'd love to hear what it's like, I'm visiting there soon. What should I expect?

I loved Aus! My goal is to move there someday. Yes they do drive on the other side. I founds the people very very friendly. Their public transportation is awesome. Beautiful girls. I find overall it is q totally different atmosphere. Lot more laid back and stress free. Pretty much everything other than supermarkets close at like 5pm. End up chilling at a beach or patio somewhere. I'm sure you will have tons of fun! Overall a beautiful place with beautiful people. Very hot though I will tell ya. And cost of things are usually higher there. Where about are you going? By yourself?

I've lived in Australia for many years during my adolescence. The place is wicked. Here is a pros and cons list.

Pros:
-The Weather. No matter what time of year it is, the weather is perfect somewhere in Australia. If you wanna snowboard, you can. If you wanna hit a beach, there's always a warm place somewhere in the country.
- The People. They are very friendly and warm to MOST others. Of course, many are racist as hell, but I blame that on not being very educated rather than malicious prejudice. All my encounters as a "foreigner" have been nothing but positive.
- The Women. I find since it's more of an outdoors based nation, people are in better shape. A large meal at mcdonalds is equivalent to our small. People just seem much more active and laid back, and subsequently better looking. Of course, there are cows too but not as many. Also, the women LOVE Canadians, so use it to ur advantage.

The Cons:
-Racist. Very, very racist. Not much else to say. If you are asian or middle eastern, you might face outward discrimination. I think it's disgusting, but it's rampant
-Deadly Animals. If you're in a city, you're fine. If you venture out into the outback or rainforest...watch out for snakes...or saltwater crocs up in the north parts of Queensland or the Northern Territory.
- Cost of Living. It's absolutely ridiculous. Yes, people make more, but it costs more to live there.

Feel free to PM me if you want any info or cool places to go. I still visit frequently and hope to one day spend half a yr living there and half here.

I'm going all over Australia and New Zealand with a friend of mine. We're going during the winter, which is their summer, it really seems like everything is opposite over there.

I was wondering, do toilets really flush in the opposite direction, or is it a myth? I've been all over Europe, but I'm more excited about going to Australia and New Zealand, it just seems perfect over there. Beautiiful weather, hot women, what's their food like over there? Do they like Canadians? Is Sydney more fun than Melbourne?

"Do toilets over there flush in the opposite direction?" That was the first thing I tried when I got there. The toilets don't but I didn't check water draining from a sink.

I spent 2 weeks at Bondi Beach (near Sydney) with and Australian model I met in Hong Kong. She visited New York too. Real nice people. I was there at Christmas, which is their summer. Was about 20 years ago.

Besides the racism, it sounds amazing. What are the best places to check out? What are some of the things that are absolute must do's? Are the women much hotter there than in Canada? Can I see kangaroos near the city, or would I have to go to the outback? What's the food like? What do they eat over there?

Yes

Do toilets over there flush in the opposite direction?
No, but what I suspect you are asking about are drains - and in that case the answer is yes.

Can I see kangaroos near the city
Not everywhere but some places yes, typically Wallabies the compact car of the Kangaroo family. The birds are amazing, and the parrot - cockatoo family is heavily represented among Australasian avifauna.

Do they eat kangaroos over there? Or are kangaroos like dogs/cats over here, where they're just not eaten?

When I was in Alaska the big thing they ate over there was reigndeer hot dogs, sausages etc. I'd love to have a kangaroo hot dog.

They eat Roo, but you've got to like it almost blue, barely cooking it, and croc which I say is more like pork but some say chicken. The biggest thing I've had against Oz is that there is a lot of distance between a lot of good things to see and do. Just like Canada sometime you have to travel a 1000 or 2000 miles to the next neat thing. I've known people who have gone there to travel for 3 months and didn't see half. They don't like whimps.

Oh ya! It's hot!!! Hot, hot, hot!

Pretty much everything costs the same as here but they make a lot less.

I can't remember where but there was an article on the net debunking the whole toilet water going backwards myth.

More importantly, I knew a guy who visited New Zealand and he said the women there are VERY friendly and active so don`t be shy. Be a sport and let us know if this is true when you get back!

It is my understanding that it is dry (i.e. tough) because it is extremly lean.
That's it. I've never had it as a steak or chops, only the leg and just in stews and such. Considering the workout that muscle gets, you can understand why it would go to leather if not cooked properly.

Don't forget the fish. Barramundi is a great catch and a great eat. You can even buy it now in TO.

One member, destilatt, was asking questions last fall and was planning a trip, but didn't come back with a report. Too bad. It would have been some up dated info.

I have spent an equal amount of time in my life in Australia and in Canada...

here are some answers to your inquiries...

1. Drive on the other side of the road
2. Sydney is the New york of Australia, Melbourne is called the Paris of the south, Brisbane (and south Queensland in general) is the florida of Oz - you can go for a surf before work.
3. Lots of slang words and different words for items: a 'jumper' is a 'sweater' for example. They shorten every word you can imagine: University is Uni for example. Nice accent
4. The women are pretty open and independent. They often go topless on beaches etc without the prudishness of NA. You find gorgeous women in lots of countries so don't know if there are more than here or not in general.
5. Eat healthier - more Asian, mediterranean and indain food. Melbourne had the widest diversity of restaurants you can encouneter - more so than Toronto. Everything from Mongolian, Swedish, Greek (Melbourne has the 2nd highest greek population, behind Athens), all types of Asian and everhything else in between.
6. Racism is part of the culture: Asian influence form WWII is still remembered (especially up north in Queensland, where a lot of retirees go and the Japanese have bought up lots of hotels and golf courses). It is cheaper for Japanese to fly to Australia to play a round of golf than to do so in Japan!
7. Unspoilt beaches and wilderness - in general you can camp where you feel like (not restricted to 15 x 40 ft 'lots' in provincial parks, although these are available. Last time I went, I camped behind the dunes near a beach alongside a creek (you can drink the running water) and surfed for a week. Only saw 3 other people and my GF and I could do whatever we wanted (LOL).
8. Kanagaroos are encroaching cloer to the city (and the cities are moving out)...you only need go an hour or so outside to a state park etc to see them. If you go out bush at all you'll seee hundreds.
9. Yes, they eat Kanagaroo and other wildlife including Emu - both taste great. I've also had corocdile, buffalo (they are wild up north) and snake. Wichety grubs are native and taste pretty good as well.
10. Snakes and spiders - take some precautions. Always shake your boots or shoes out before putting them on. If you see a snake, stomp on the ground - they don't like the vibrations, check your tent before going in an roll up your sleepeing bag etc - prefereably hang it up so a snake cannot hide under it. Out back of Sydney you also have to watch for wild pigs - they'll chase cars (bump into them unitl they die) and rip your legs off if they get you. I haven't seen a croc, but I also haven't camped up north - don't cmap near the water up there.
11. I have found cost of living pretty similar to Ontario. Not as many extra taxes, but I was also working so that accounted for it. Housing has gone up a lot in the last few years (especially in cities) and they introduced 10 % GST. Pricing is usually GST included. Restaurants seem more expensive until you remember you don't need to tip (I sometimes did, if I received better than average service).

=> Great place to spend an extended amount of time if possible!!

PS The woman in my sig pic is an Aussie!
