Has anyone been hit with a sextortion email?

There's a new scam in town. From the dark web they buy your e-mail address and a current or old password. Doesn't matter if its new or old, we all recognize our own children.
Then by telling you your own password, and claiming to have taken over your computer in the past while you watch porn from a site where they planted ,malware, they will send a video of the whole show to everyone in your contact list.

I googled email blackmail and the government of Canada has a really good website on all the fraud scams and how to stay safe.

Then I emailed everything I could in my online fraud report. I hope the son of a bitch is in Canada so the RCMP can park his ass in court and burn up all the stolen cash in legal fees.

stay safe everyone

I pay the money for legit Microsoft everything (and all my software) and keep my contacts in their Cloud. Keep electrical tape over your webcam camera.

If these fuckers defeat those two security measures of mine, then my entire contacts list deserves to see me spankin' it. Drink a lot and use that as your future excuse.

(I got an email similar to yours and ignored it. Nothing has happened.)

So far, all the ones I have received have been a real password, albeit an older one. At least one was a password I only ever used on Yahoo.

Yup, it's scary.

The scammer is mining old passwords from hacker password dumps and in most cases spoofing the sending address.

I have been getting lots of them recently. Some with random paw others with old pw I use to use.

There are a couple versions - one that claims to know your password and another that claims it took pictures of you via webcam while watching porn sites. My PC with five 28" screens doesn't even have a webcam! They threaten to send the video of you to all your contacts.

Sadly enough folks will fall for this and send them money when they really don't have anything that can harm you.

How many people keep the same password for all websites?

Except for TERB, I typically go with the Website Acronym + Nickname + # + Symbol (eg. TERBBigDick5!)

I keep one password for normal life and one for everything hobby related and I make sure I never use my browser with my normal life stuff for anything hobbling or outside trusted networks. (Made mistake once when I got hacked was very lucky then ) won’t make same mistake again
My hobbying browser is different than my regular one.

Nope. Never got one of these. I've never received a threatening scam email before, actually. Plenty of calls on my cellphone though. I think the CRA has enlisted about 50 cops by now to track me down with an arrest warrant. Strangely they can't seem to find my address, which is pretty pathetic as they have it on file! lol

It would be scary if a scammer had my current email address and password, so I understand the fear there.

LOL - the CRA ones are the most frequent on my phone too. At least we can check CRA mail online to verify if need be. What are we signing up for though??

Thanks for the feedback everyone. My sphincter went into full arrest when I read it. If the shit did the fan, I would stand up tall and without shame and say "Yeah, so what?" I am a heterosexual male that appreciates beautiful women, and then ask everyone "who is without sin cast the first stone".
I might be looked down on by some, but then again, people without mercy or compassion are not worth having as friends, associates or colleagues.

This whole experience has taught me several things.
-change all my passwords
-try and figure out how to block or junk all emails from people not in my contacts list.
-stay connected to the powned website ( https://haveibeenpwned.com ) as suggested by the government fraud website to see if any of emails or passwords are compromised.

once again a big thanks to all of the brothers and sisters.

Interesting site. Checked my old email plus all three of my current. My old email was compromised in 2016, and one of my current ones in late 2017. I regularly update my passwords, so all my current ones are fine, but I just went back and changed the password on my old account just in case.

I too received this scam or a variation of it. The password was an old password of mine....thankfully not a current one. Same story about controlling my computer and having video footage. Luckily I never use the camera and it is always covered so I knew right away that they didn't have any footage which lessened the concern. I did use my work laptop to change all of my active passwords and did a full wipe and install on the laptop to be safe.

I'm pretty sure Yahoo itself has been hacked multiple times now, so even if you never used those addresses on other sites, you'd be fudged.
