Now even avocado oil maybe watered down.

Why your avocado oil may be fake and contain other cheap oils

Avocado oil is a rising star in the culinary world. It’s a heart-healthy cooking oil with a mild flavour that appeals to health-conscious consumers.

But scientists say that adulteration and mislabeling are rampant in the avocado oil industry, and that many people who believe they’re buying pure avocado oil are being misled by some of the nation’s largest retail chains.

Scientists at the University of California at Davis tested avocado oil samples, and have for the first time revealed the names of a dozen retailers who they say sold products labeled as avocado oil that contained cheap seed and vegetable oils, including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Kroger and Safeway. The companies didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The researchers found that at least 21 of the products labeled as avocado oil — nearly two-thirds of the 36 bottles they tested — were adulterated, in some cases with other oils that could pose a hazard to people with food sensitivities. The newly released findings are based on tests conducted in 2021 on bottles of store-brand avocado oil purchased from 19 large grocery stores in the United States and Canada.

Other retailers whose products failed testing said they couldn’t verify findings based on bottles of oil tested in 2020 or 2021. Some retailers confirmed they don’t do their own testing and instead rely on suppliers and third-party services to verify the purity of the oil.

Retailers have a “responsibility to make sure that what’s on the label is consistent with the product itself,” said Selina Wang, the scientist who led the research and an associate food science professor at the University of California at Davis. “Based on our research that’s simply not the case.”

In a statement, the Food and Drug Administration acknowledged that “high value oils” such as avocado oil “are potential targets for economically motivated adulteration.” “The FDA does not comment on specific studies,” an FDA official said, “but evaluates them as part of the body of evidence to further our understanding about a particular issue.”

How cheap avocado oil is made
Avocado oil is the fastest-growing segment of the edible oils market, with global sales of more than half a billion dollars. The UC-Davis research suggested that low-priced avocado oils were the most likely to be adulterated. Most major retailers do not produce their own avocado oil, and instead buy it from suppliers, bottle it and put their store labels on it.

Much of the avocado oil sold by retailers is “refined,” which means it’s a lower-quality, highly-processed oil that is bleached, deodorized and filtered. (Virgin and extra virgin oils are “unrefined” and typically pressed from high-quality avocados without using heat or chemicals.)

Suppliers selling fake avocado oil
The popularity of avocado oil is largely due to the health halo around avocados. Avocado oil is rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, antioxidants, minerals and vitamin E.

Avocado oil is relatively expensive to produce, and retail stores that buy it from suppliers at unrealistically low prices should have some idea that they’re not getting the real thing, Wang said. “If a buyer finds that an oil is quite a bit lower in price compared to others, there’s probably a reason for that,” she added.

Costco sell the Chosen Foods 100% Avocado oil which has been proven over and over again to be the real deal. But don't take my word for it.

Cholesterol is an absolutely ESSENTIAL substance involved in the production of cell membranes. You literally cannot live without it, which is why your body produces it.

The research actually shows that what matters is that you have enough GOOD cholesterol. It trumps the bad.

I actually find it hilarious that absolutely necessary products that are essential for life on earth are labelled BAD.

CO2. Good lord, the most useful compound on the planet, ESSENTIAL for ALL life on earth, it is actually at low levels in geological terms, yet is is labelled a POISON!

There are 3 food groups, Carbs, Fats, and Proteins. Carbohydrates are the ONLY one of the three that is inessential, yet the one most promoted as the 'solution' to modern day health issues.

The current medical consensus (wait an hour it’ll change again) is that eating less cholesterol doesn’t lower cholesterol significantly enough to affect rates of heart disease. Doctors should just prescribe medication.

Some will interpret this as, I told you Eggs are really good for you.

Others may interpret this as, big pharma manipulating the system to keep doctors over prescribing meds, instead of a healthy lifestyle choices.

you can decide for yourselves. Personally eggs are delicious.

Isnt it absolutely obvious that eating what we are designed to eat is best?

Did the cave man need meds? Did he need to limit his cholesterol?

Anything artificial means clearly we are doing something wrong.

Modern doctors would be telling anteateaters, " You gotta stop eating ants, they raise your triglycerides too much, you need mediation to control it."

Everything you do in life, I don’t care, good or bad – don’t blame God, don’t blame the devil, don’t blame me, blame you. You control everything! The thoughts you think, the words you utter, the foods you eat, the exercise you do. Everything is controlled by you.

Many so-called spiritual people, they overeat, drink too much, they smoke and don’t exercise. But they do go to church every week and pray ‘Please help my arthritis. Please help me bring up my strength, make me young again.’

Life expectancy wasn't very high but then how many women died during child berth? Infant mortality was extremely high as well.

And there were the sabretooth tigers....

Being lean is more important than diets. That is why the "Twinkie diet" of corner store garbage can improve health markers, the guy just controlled his consumption.
Like about 2/3rd of being healthy. Then you can worry about eating properly [a land mine I am not going to waste my time stepping on here] and moving. [Not that a fatty can't get health gainz from moving and eating better but they are leaving a lot more potential on the table.

And if you are going to do the Twinkie diet, you gotta get your multi vitamins. IIRC buddy also ate some baby carrots every day. No matter how think you are, if you are not meeting your RDA, RNI or whatever they call it now, you will run into problems.

I don’t think hunter gatherers had a life style which could lead to long life expectancy. They lived in harsh condition, eat disease carrying animals, drank polluted water, exposed to parasites and lived with hygiene issues. Not to forget most of time they were the meal for most animals.
That is my point! Comparing our ancestor's diet to today's is ridiculous. They ate what was eatable period. The life span was 33 and today if I'm not mistaken is around 75. Eat within your caloric maintenance for the day and adjust it if you want to gain or lose weight accordingly. Everything should be consumed in moderation because gluttony of anything can end up slapping one in the back of the head out of nowhere.

I've done extensive research on just this question. Okay, I just did a quick Google search. Poor hygiene, illnesses, bad nourishment and burden of labour lead to an average life expectancy of 20-25 years. Many children already died in their first 4 years, which is not surprising.

Modern medicine and treatments for all sorts of diseases, certainly increases our average lifespan.

Probably about 33.

A spear through the ribs does awful things to your heart.

But I know the point you are probably trying to make, and it is misguided.

A virus is not a disease. We die of diseases, the cave man died of viruses, injuries, infections, starvation, violence from other people or animals, natural disasters.

We die of diseases because we do not eat what we are designed for, not are as active as our bodies require.

When Europeans first came to America, they were astonished at the magnificent physical condition of the natives. And that goes for almost all local people eating natural , unprocessed foods.

Look up 'Diseases of Civilization". They are virtually unknown in more primitive societies that DO have long lives.

Agriculture was discovered about 12,000 years ago, which is far too short for evolution to effect changes required to adapt to processed foods, sedentary lifestyles, etc. So we ARE essentially cavemen who still do best on caveman food. And exercise.

For the most part, modern medicine treats diseases that are a result of our abandonment of the diet and activity levels that our great^100 ancestors HAD to follow. Bad hygiene was far worse in the middle ages than in pre-agricultural times. At the same time we have cleaned up most deaths from things like tuberculosis, child birth, and various viruses that vaccinations can protect against.

Science can just get it totally wrong when combined with financial and/or political power motives.

LACK of food was more a problem after civilizations and huge population growth emerged. Pre-agricultural man was more or less part of the balance of nature - yes, polar bears, lions, etc die of starvation, as did primitive man, but when he did eat, the food was nourishing.

Labour doesn't kill people if they have enough food and sleep. Plenty of evidence that the longest living people on earth are constantly active.
