Harpers use of `God bless Canada` in speeches
By John Chuckman
Friday January 20, 2006

I hadn't realized until recently that Stephen Harper was using "God Bless Canada!" as a tagline for his speeches. Some may think this a harmless, or even beneficent, expression for a politician to use, but for those with knowledge of history, nothing could be a more frightening.

I do believe we all know to whom Harper is tipping his hat with these words. George Bush, author of two wars which have killed more than a hundred thousand innocent people and the champion of an ugly set of repressive laws in the United States, says "God Bless America!" every chance he gets.

Some might say Bush uses the line because he has nothing else to say, and I don't doubt this is part of the truth. But slogans of this kind are always used to protect dangerous people from criticism. The words are used also as code, a kind of insidious political wink, to bloodthirsty supporters, the Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell types. They says things that cannot be uttered in public.

Bush usually says it in front of a set of gigantic, eagle-topped American flags, reminiscent of nothing so much as the days when Germany's leader spoke and sputtered in front of platoons of monstrous, threatening flags.

Bush also always wears a prominently-placed American flag pin on his lapel, just in case you forget where he's from. I can never help thinking of the image of Hitler wearing his quiet Iron Cross on an otherwise plain, neatly-tailored uniform. Neatness and patriotism for the cameras instead of troops sloshing through human blood.

And 95% of Canadians who backpack abroad like to put a Canadian flag on their backpack because we are so concerned and disturbed that the rest of teh world might not be able to tell us apart from Americans. BFD. You're criticizing a leader of a country for too much displays of patriotism in the country he is the leader of. Imagine that... "I don't think he'd be a good leader for our country - he's too patriotic"

Hey scroll, stfu.

Scroll you seem to have a problem with westerners using the phrase God bless America or Canada. You claim they do it in part to protect themselves from critcism. Once again the evolved and civilized West uses words while you apologists for the religion of envy use violence. A few innocent cartoons (words and drawings) criticise your leader and hundreds of thousands of your ilk riot, kill, burn buildings and posture with threats. You are a parody of yourselves.

Yours is a fast growing faith but as we all know it is dominated by the populace of loser countries with nothing to show for themselves. Even if this cancer takes hold in the West it is by those who envy and prefer to take from others by force rather than by dint of their own efforts.

The reform party was almost a christain fundy party. This new conservative party is a christian party. Next they'll want prayer in public schools.

And patriotism is not always a good thing. When done like it is in the US it
is jingoism = Extreme nationalism characterized by a belligerent foreign policy; chauvinistic patriotism

harper wants to be an american. did you read his canada bashing US-loving speech in the national post?

We should not follow the lead of the US.

It's sad really that people fear words such as, "God Bless Canada" from our leaders.

Front row, seat #6. In Hell
The problem with religion in the world (all religions) isn't so much the religion itself, but all the mindless drones who follow it blindly, & the leaders who exploit it to heard the masses. One day the human race will evolve, learn to think. But not today.

Eh, I'm not crazy about political leaders invoking religion (whichever one it is) during political speaches.

I think religion itself is great but it can easily be twisted and used as a weapon of fear.

Since we're led to believe that his god knows the secret places of Harper's heart already, one has to wonder what purpose Stephen serves by publicly commanding his god to "bless Canada" for our benefit.

Are we supposed to shout "Amen!"? My minister's-daughter mother always said such public displays of piety were the height of hypocrisy. But then, Mr Harper is a politician.
