John Robson makes a good arguement that what Harper offers is a weird kind of socialism, instead of socialism that tries to help the poor and disinfrancised, it helps people trying to buy hockey equiptment and patios.

Its the worse form of socialism, socialism directed at the well off.

So if your going to get socialism anyways, why not vote for the NDP who actually believe in socialism/social democracy?

Applying XIXth century European terms to a XXIst century Canadian realities is an exercise in sophistry at best.

Do you agree with him that the NDP's program will never be ready for prime time?
Yes, the NDP programs are communist essentially and are not compatible with the global economy. To antagonise free market capitalism in Canada is suicidal. The NDP is the embodiment of the nanny state. Alberta is hurting very very badly, so they turned to a food stamp government, an 180 degree about face from the provincial Conservatives. Here is where the NDP governments have a dilemma. How can they placate the unions, raise corporate taxes, augment social programs while balancing the books and keep international bond rating services from downgrading credit ratings? Yes relative to America, Harper is a socialist but a the extreme right wing side of the communist spectrum.

I'm not sure doubling down on a housing bubble is they way to go.... But then again it's the singular bright spot in an economy that produced a whopping 6,600 jobs last month.

The Conservatives have lost their way. The NDP has moved pretty far right, filling the space the Liberals were in back in the 60s and 70s, before Chretien moved them right.

The NDP are still a little too far left for my liking, while the Conservatives have really botched economic policy.

It is not a good election. I'm undecided.

Good thing you won't vote in it.
As an ex-pat, Harper doesn't want you voting.

Bay Street and Wall Street seem to share my opinion not yours unfortunately. Who knows, maybe all will change soon and in the future your premise will be correct.

If the NDP win federally expect the TSX to tank even more than it did when the NDP won in Alberta. Things are bad enough in the markets without an NDP win to sink us even further.

Harper is a shrewd and savy politician who achieved a majority without Quebec. Harper is a silent sociopath, not a socialist. The. Mulcair/Trudeau cabal is still out gunned.
