Happy Socialist - "gratuitously smearing the members of the Humboldt Broncos hockey"

Social justice warrior.....

The best of humanity has been on display in my home province of Saskatchewan as our country continues to mourn and tries to make sense of that horrible bus crash that took so many innocent young lives.

The small, tight-knit community of Humboldt has been unwittingly thrust into the international spotlight, and has handled it with dignity and strength – a seemingly impossible task when 15 sons, who simply loved the iconic Canadian game of hockey — were taken from them in the blink of an eye.

I’m a member of a visible minority group and I know Saskatchewan.

I know towns like this, where people are decent.

Nora Loreto
@NoLore

I'm trying to not get cynical about what is a totally devastating tragedy but the maleness, the youthfulness and the whiteness of the victims are, of course, playing a significant role.

Where everyone knows everyone else and people take care of one another, celebrating their successes and grieving their losses, together.

You would be hard-pressed to find a kid that grew up in the prairies who didn’t travel by bus, van or car from small town to small town, for a hockey, ringette or curling tournament. I did.

Everyone supports their local teams, no matter the caliber of play, and they do so with pride.

The depth of Humboldt’s loss has touched the hearts of people around the world.

A GoFundMe campaign has already raised over $7 million (and climbing) to support the victims’ families.

So it’s difficult to imagine someone finding this to be somehow dark and nefarious. Difficult, but not impossible.

A freelance writer, self-described activist and “happy socialist,” Nora Loreto, whose work has appeared in the Globe and Mail and Maclean’s, took to her Twitter account to lament: “I’m trying to not get cynical about what is a totally devastating tragedy, but the maleness, the youthfulness and the whiteness of the victims play a significant role.”

She goes on to suggest in subsequent tweets that her point was, “I want justice and more for so many other grieving parents and communities.”

What a sad and senseless way to draw attention to other legitimate causes.

Loreto, and many others on the extreme left, apparently feel they get a pass on saying vicious and hurtful things because they claim to represent oppressed minorities.

But all such race-baiting really does is to destroy their own credibility.

No one with a good heart is looking at this loss of life in Saskatchewan through the lens of race or gender because this loss goes beyond race, gender and politics.

When people are hit with adversity, others just want to help.

Do we check the races of nations before we send in Canada’s Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to help?

Did anyone care about the colour of Haitians when Canadians stepped up to help in the wake of devastating hurricanes?

Of course not.

If you want to address institutionalized racism, fair enough, that’s a legitimate discussion.

But gratuitously smearing the members of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team to do it? That’s just appalling.

It must be exhausting to be so angry and aggrieved all of the time.

To say nothing of pathetic.

Unfortunately there seem to be more & more people these days who are incapable of looking at any situation & not applying the prisim of gender & race.

She is a pathetic individual.

Utterly bankrupt of common decency.
She does have a point but this is the wrong time to bring this up, and also she seems very nasty in her tone. I highly doubt this individual is a real socialist or leftist, just a liberal.

My god! I don't even know where to start. But like James said "pathetic individual" is an understatement. I'd rather keep my blood pressure down so no comment.

People who use a tragedy to benefit their own cause should be hung on social media. But then again that's what she wants, she an attention whore. How do we stop trolls and such, don't feed them.

I’d agree with you...although I would suggest that Adrian Batta and the Toronto Sun are far bigger offenders in this regard. They have taken a Twitter post from some unknown kook writer that no one had ever heard of and used their shitty Right Wing rag to broadcast it with a megaphone in an effort to smear “many others on the extreme left.”

In fact, no one else on the Left, Right, or anyplace else on the political spectrum has said any such thing. The Toronto Sun is using the Humboldt tragedy as a vehicle to smear the Left. All that they are accusing this writer of is more accurately be applied to these assholes.

Statement from MacLean’s

Statement from MacLean’s

We’d like to clarify that, contrary to misinformation being spread on social media, Nora Loreto has never been an employee of Maclean’s. She is a freelance writer who published one article on our website a few months ago. We had nothing to do with her extraordinarily inappropriate tweet regarding the Humboldt tragedy. We will have nothing else to say on this matter at the current time because we do not wish to distract from the tributes and grief being expressed on behalf of the victims of the accident, nor do we wish to feed into the torrent of abuse that Ms. Loreto has been subjected to since publishing her tweet.

Thank God! And Loreto deserves all the negative press for her comments.

I have zero sympathy for Loreto. Let her deal with all the heat she is getting on Twitter for her stupid comments.

I just don’t see how this rises to the level of a national story. Everybody who’s ever heard of this wing nut before the Sun put her on Blast- raise your hand...

Exactly

The Sun has its own agenda for creating this non-story.

Well said. Could apply to some on these forums too.

Humboldt is a worldwide story. When someone makes a comment like Loreto did, somebody's going to mention it. Batra wrote about it in The Sun, but she wasn't the first. Loads of people on were talking about it on Twitter and Facebook days before Batra did.

Some comedians joke about this. And Hurricane Katrina was a public example of this.

I don't think she's wrong - if it was a busload of Chinese tourists on a class trip and they got killed, I wonder what the press coverage would have been, what the solidarity level would have been, and would they have raised the $9million that has been donated as of today.

However, what she is missing is the connection to the victims. You are in a hockey loving country - so for many people this hits home because they played hockey, their kids play hockey, or they know someone who plays hockey. So they know what it's like, they think it could have been them or their kids or friends, etc. That's why this hits many people very hard.

Where she has erred is the timing. Why talk about this now? Absolutely wrong to do so.

Well, perhaps all hockey clubs should have one person of color, in case of an accident. That way the monetary and the emotional outpouring can be "pure".
