It's funny that only Mexicans living in the United States celebrate the 5th of May, in Mexico proper is not even a holiday and nobody celebrates it.

For all of you that don't know what's the big deal about the 5th of May it was the day that a smaller, ill-armed Mexican army defeated Napoleo's III bigger and better French army, believe it or not that battle decided the fate United States history too, for if the Fench had won that battle, France would had been able to help and funnel arms to the Confederate army which was fighting a war against the North. The Mexicans prevented France from setting up a beachhead and bringing it tens of thousands of seasoned fighters that were going to be sent to help the South's rebel army.

I went to Mexico once with a few handy phrases that a friend gave me.

FYI "Bordello" does NOT mean "Railroad Station"...

Alien funny, it seems my nephews wife and her family have celebrated this all her life.

It is my guess he being born, raised and educated, just outside of Mexico City, disqualifies her as Mexican. But I will pass your wisdom on to her and advise her that Mexicans do not celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Thank you once again for your insight.

My research (hey, I'm interested in Mexico) tells me that the celebration of the Cinco de Mayo is third in importance in Mexico after the Independence Day on September 16th, and the November 20th Revolution Day. Cinco de Mayo, however, is the biggest Mexican celebration in the United States.

Happy Cinco de Mayo

Holy hell PAPASMURF, Some Mexicans who have just arrived in the USA don't even know what the hell they celebrate 5 de Mayo for. Just because a Chinese guy tells you he knows Kung-Fu you are going to believe him?

"When I tell you that the burro is white it's because I'm clutching it's hairs in my hand". --An wise old latin saying.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Most Mexicans don't know what 5 de Mayo is" --- "It's NOT a big holiday in Mexico"

"The purpose of the event is not to celebrate what Mexico has done, but what Mexican Americans have done in America,"

What do the links above prove? That 5 de Mayo is NOT a Mexican thing, it's a fake holiday invented by Mexican immigrants in the USA to celebrate a battle that happened in 1862. It's mostly only celebrated in the U.S.

LOL, those seasoned fighters went on to start and lose Franco-Prussian War. France didn't even fight against an official country.

Now, you're niether American nor Mexican but want to lecture someone on his family's customs???? Dios Mio!

Your Logic escapes logic

The fact that something is also celebrated in parts of the US, tells you it is not celebrated in Mexico??????

So now because Madi Gras is celebrated in New Orleans by your logic Canival is not Celebrated in Rio.
