The film Amadeus is fictional, yet Mozart went out of fashion before he died. When he moved to Vienna, Salieri was one of Beethoven's teachers. The young man from Bonn supplemented his income by performing Mozart's piano concertos.

Elton John and Eddie Van Halen are/were classically trained musicians. We may have lost EVH in the mid 00's if Valerie Bertinelli had not taken care of him - especially after palate surgery.

I've downloaded Tar, a film about Mahler's 5th Symphony starring Cate Blanchett and Mark Strong. The film is 158 minutes long, it's the Maestro's birthday, good time to watch it.

Is that from Rome Opera? I watched Claudio Abbado direct Lucia de Lammermoor there.
It's from his time as Music Director of the Berlin Philharmonic. Unfortunately I didn't have a live feed in the late 90's.
I am sorry, I lied. It was his nephew Roberto Abbado who directed Lucia de Lammermoor at Teatro dell'Opera in Roma in 2015.
I did get around to watching Tar, it was a tough slog and not what I expected. The film is very quiet in parts when the Mahler comes in, it's almost jarring. The challenging roles that once went to Meryl Streep are now going to Cate Blanchett. She carries the film as a female conductor who's been acclaimed at every turn but can't escape her hubris. She is very well supported by Mark Strong in an out of type role. He's the last person I'd imagine to play a Dr. Smith (Lost in Space), he does it thoroughly convincing - great actor.
The film is not really about Mahler's 5th, which I saw performed live in Amsterdam. Before the concert, as part of the ticket package, I got an added concert in one of the Concertgebouw's recital halls. It was Mozart's Gran Partita.
