It's already been done, quietly. Since it became a hot topic, the people in charge decided that Apu would not be in any future episodes. Many years ago I was at a talk by M. Reiss, a senior writer at The Simpsons, and he broached the topic. He said back in the year 1(ish) nobody was sure of how the character of Apu would be received, and with a very foreign accent. A short time later the East Indian community were happy, not just that they were being portrayed, but portrayed as a decent, tax paying, law abiding person. Decades later the social justice crowd decided this was an affront to East Indians. And that's when the suits decided to pull the plug on Apu.
This prompts a question. Why is it that the social justice warriors cannot find fault with the character of Homer Simpson, or any other white man in The Simpsons with foibles? There are many.
