Great answer! I personally find the flag offensive but I'm not looking for some government agency to shut the restaurant down because of my opinion. I am a big boy afterall, who lives in a very diverse society. The best way to voice your contempt for this owner, is to simply not eat there. It seems pretty straightforward to me.... although those ribs are looking mighty tempting.

His Upper James location had a Restaurant Makeover done on it. The crowd he draws seem to be a lot of Mohawk College students.

The food is good though. Everyone has a choice to eat there or not. We do live in a country where we have the option to make our own choices.

People need to get a bit thicker skin and spend more time on things that make a difference, like poverty and hunger.

Priceless! Parody is a wonderful form of criticism.

This is along the lines of saying that the Heer (Army) was just the same as the SS-Totenkopfverbände (The concentration camp service). Are you with a straight face comparing the Confederate States Army to the Holocaust? General Robert E. Lee to Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler or Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich?

Yes, the confederate army headed by General Lee were fighting exclusively for the right to massacre women and children within the walls of the death camps they built. I admit the comparison was lost on me also.

No one going to this place gives a flyer about the technicalities of the civil war.
Everyone knows the connotations of the rebel flag.

He also has a sign up saying "No Souvlaki, donairs, etc. and we never will have them."

It's not very classy.

Which goes to my previous comments about dishonouring the flag under which C.S.A. veterans fought and died.

I live in Hamilton but have not been to this establishment. It seems all of this uproar is playing into this guys hands. All these people who bitch and complain about this guys decor are giving him free press and publicity , they just don't have the brains to figure out they are playing into this guys hands. Having said that I personally hate anybody telling me how I should think or what is "correct". I think what I want , say what I want and believe what I want and I don't need the government or the courts or the left wing telling me what's the "norm". I live my life by MY rules, anyone who doesn't like that can go fuck yourself!!!

My apologies for the above. It just seems to me this country has become way too politically correct.

By all means, knock yourself out, but not to the extent that you infringe on other people's rights to live their live by their rules.

I don't tell anybody how to live their life. I just keep to myself. Everybody has the right to think for themselves and to believe what they want to believe and to have their own values. I just don't like it when some group decides they don't share the same values as I do so they try to tell me my way of thinking is "wrong".

I've been there and the food is fine if you like rich, heavy, bbq styled food.

I could care less about the Confederate flag. Personally I think it's being overly politically correct.

People are choosing one aspect of what the flag represents (support of slavery). So if someone has a german flag are they supporting Nazis? Or does a US flag mean you support slaughter of Natives (or do we need a flag from that time period.... if so then change it to does the currentl US flag support the pre 1960's treatment of blacks?)..... does the Canadian flag mean we support Natives abused in residential schools and dying on reserves?

But the real question is when are people going to edit out the confederate flag from the general lee on reruns of the dukes of hazard and bleep out mention of General Lee? :D

My take on all this. Last year he had one restaurant and got caught up in the media hype regarding his sign "We speak English to serve you better". It was great fodder for talk radio, newpapers etc. He just opened his second restaurant and displays a cont**********sial confederate flag overhead. Once the media settles down he probably will have had enough financial success from the confederate flag publicity to open his third and fourth......

Not really.

We have these things called laws. And laws are created by society to protect people for the greater good.

For example, I'm sure that there are people whose values are perfectly ok with brothers and sisters getting married, or kiddie porn, or stealing or what have you. However, society says that this sort of thing is wrong.

Likewise, we have hate laws in Canada that were put in place by society to prevent people from espousing their values (hatreds towards one group or another) where those values are not welcome.

Ergo, the Confederate flag is a racist symbol, regardless of whether or not the fuck who owns this restaurant believes it is so or not. This is the way it works.

It is physically impossible to stop people from thinking however they want, but it is possible to stop them from disseminating those values if society at large does not agree with them.

Only if the population of Hamilton supports him in his subtle racism.

So just because you think the confederate flag is a racist symbol makes you right? I don't look at that flag the way you do, so I suppose my view must be morally wrong while yours is right? Don't tell me what to think or how to think. Everyone is entitled to their opinions whether you agree with them or not.

What do you propose if someone arrives at the border in Windsor, Fort Erie, Queenston etc. . . with a Order of the Stars and Bars or Sons of Confederate Veterans license plate or plaque on their automobile a Diplomatic incident given the number of high profile members of the two organizations?
