If you have a sound card that is integrated to your motherboard, and its broken how would you go about replacing it. I was thinking that you would simply instal a PCI sound card and work from there. but then my question how does you cpu know which sound card to send the signal to???

You have to be careful when you buy a motherboard with an integrated sound card. You want to get a mb that you can turn off the integrated sound card (or video card for that matter) so you can add a separate component.

Offhand, I dunno how you turn the integrated version off. Your mb might auto-detect when an additional card is plugged in. Or there might be a jumper switch? Check your mb manual (if you don't have it, do a search online).

You should be able to disable the sound card in the motherboard, in Device Manager.

or

You can install a new sound card in a PCI slot, and in Control Panel > Sounds & Audio Devices, you can select the appropriate sound card there

disable onboard audio in the bios and do not install or remove audio drivers in add/remove program in control panel.

if you don't disable the onboard audio in the bios you are going to have the bluescreen of death or some other conflict with the drivers.

1. Best to disable onboard audio via BIOS

OR from

2. Control Panel -> Sound & Audio Devices -> Audio, then

Select your Default Playback and Recording device.

Check (at bottom left corner) " Use Only default devices"

Disabling the onboard soundcard from the BIOS is the best thing to do. It will usually be listed as onboard sound, simply set this to disable or off and reboot for best results.
