Banning firearms needs to be looked at seriously. I suspect that the negative effects on the objective (reducing gun violence) may outweigh the positives in the long run, but you can't just toss a potential solution outside just because someone can't play with their gun anymore. There are more important things at stake.
Now heres a response from someone that just doesnt get it. I dont mean to attack you wiki but what you're saying will accomplish nothing.

What do you think a gun ban will accomplish? These thugs arent legitimately buying guns. Do you think they fill out the forms, endure the red tape just to get a Gloc so that they can smoke RayRay on the corner for bitch slapping their babymomma? Or do you think they are all being stolen from legit gun owners in Canada to be sold on the street for a C note? I dont think there are enough legitimately owned Mac10s, Tec9s (eventhough they arent made anymore) or 9mms here to facilitate that. They are buying these guns on the black market now and they'll continue to do it with a gun ban.

and even if you manage to eradicate guns completely in Canada, they are going to turn to another alternative. They can barely spell their name but they can get very creative if they want someone gone....and in the end of the day does it really matter what they use to murder with?

Its ok, you're not attacking me, you're attacking my views, which is what debate is about. Many people on here (including myself sometimes) engage in ad hominem/personal attacks that accomplish nothing, but attacking my ideas is welcomed.

If you re-read my post though, you'll notice I'm speculating that you may actually be right, but that I don't think we have enough evidence to make a call either way. And it would suck to spend stupid amounts of government dollars on banning guns if its not worth it.

Bottom line is that there is no SINGLE-FACETED solution that will fix this. It has to be multi-pronged attack because as you have demonstrated, there are so many variables at play.

Your latent and back-handed racism (or culturalism) aside, the reasons YOU present are good reasons for not banning guns, but someone has to figure out whether your reasons are actually valid.

The right-wing absolutists spout neo-con drivel like 'gun ownership is sacred'. Which is BIZARRE. Just because they can string together a bunch of words into a sentence doesn't make the sentence true or meaningful.

Show me how gun ownership is sacred!

Your writing style is very familiar, I'm puzzled as to what other handle you use to post on this board. Your views are to strident to have such a low post count in three years unless you also post under another name.

Your comments themselves show why personal gun ownership is important.:)

That's interesting, who do you think I am? I dunno if it matters but I can assure you I don't post under another name.

Even though your threats are beyond benign, they are unbecoming.

Too bad, wikiwild, you missed a vaild argument.

While I cringe at many of Coren's rantings - both on radio and print - the man is no dummy and, on this issue, with the points put forward, got to agree with him!!!

Don't dismiss him as quickly as some people dismiss the entire guns/gangs debate.

It wasn't a threat, it was an observation. I don't threaten I simply point out various potential outcomes from courses of action.

When you threaten someone you put them on the alert, that removes the element of surprise that is so much fun.

You're right.. it would suck to pass some stupid law that accomplishes nothing...last thing I want is my tax dollars wasted on useless laws based on empty conclusions.

and I agree with you...there is no one solution to this. But the govt has a way of half assed behavior...what i dont want is for them to get taken with this gun law bullshit and then leave it at that thinking they properly handled the issue when they in fact did not. Thats why I'm steering away from this gun ban angle...I can see it happing...they ban guns add a whole bunch of red tape and the crime rate goes nowhere (except perhaps up)

yeah, someone somewhere has to do the ground work but I'm pretty confident the ground work has already been done.... The cops know better than anyone that a ban wont alleviate things...just ask them, they have to deal with this nonsense everyday and they see things that sheltered people like us would never be exposed to. but the only cop the govt will listen to is Chief Blair and that guy is getting caught up in this political game so you know its gonna go nowhere

I dont think its sacred, but it is a right to be had and the guys that are buying these guns proplery arent the problem...so why stress it? Cars kill more people than guns...why not ban those?

Nice Dens
Having spent more than a few years in the NWT with Aboriginals (Dene, Cree) and seeing first hand the number of weapons (long rifles) those communities own, it is surprising how few deaths are caused by guns. The native communities are for the most part poor, with low level housing conditions, poor health facilities, mediocre education facilities, above average alchohol use, high unemployment levels.

The majority of deaths of young naitve people in the north country are via suicide, accidents, or are alchohol related, not gunfire. If poverty is to be used as a partial excuse for the gun deaths of young urban black men why is this trend not taking place on a similar scale in the native communities?

Quick guess, native communities aren't anywhere near major metropolitan cities?

People that have lived around guns that are used properly see them for the useful tool they are. They respect them and know what they can do. They don't see them as a way for demanding respect or as a status symbol.
