Wayne Gretzky is used to being 'cancelled'. He was run out of his hometown more than fifty years ago. Now some of our country is trying to do the same. My thoughts on L'affair Gretzky.
I've done a little digging about what happened pregame of Canada-USA and just an FYI- I got this info second hand so you're now about to get it third hand- take from it what you will.
As I understand it Wayne met Mike Eruzione pre game and after cursory hello's Wayne saw he had a USA jersey over his arm. He said, 'oh geez, did you bring your 1980 jersey or a replica of it? I never discussed this or was asked by Hockey Canada or anybody to wear a jersey. I don't have a Team Canada 99 or anything. ' 'No,' Mike Said. 'I have a Johnny Gaudreau jersey, I'm going to wear it.' 'Ah, okay. Great idea, his Dad ( family) is here, we're in the States, that's awesome.'
That's how I heard it went down. Shortly after, Wayne proceeded to the Canadian dressing room ( as the accompanying video shows) did what he was asked and I thought spoke well about the sacrifices that's required to play in these types of events. He'd know better than most. He never turned down a best-on-best invite and in fact had he played in the WJ at 18 or 19 years of age he may have scored 60-70 points. Ridiculous how good he was for Canada time and time again. He suited up eight times for our Country and was the head of our Hockey ops that won us gold in 2002, 2004.
Wayne left the Canadian room, waited for his call to come out on the ice, gave a thumbs up to the American team and like he's done countless times before - he acted as our Hockey Ambassador. Myself, I think I would have asked Paul Henderson especially with Eruzione attending but no matter, we had a great choice, we had the Great One and he did a great job. I have zero problem with any of this and I believe this is how it all went down.
Wayne joins a long list of athletes and celebrities who have openly supported Trump. I find it all mystifying. To me Trump is a cartoon character and every time he talks it just sounds like he's doing a reality TV show. I guess in some respects, he is. However, I am not versed enough in American politics to make a really valid comment and of course I don't vote there so, they can choose to do what they want. Same with Wayne.
He can choose to support whomever he wants. It will not diminish one iota what he has done for hockey in our country. And to delve into that a bit more, I will turn the clock back to January 1999 as I sat at the kitchen table in the home Wayne grew up in, in Brantford, Ontario.
I was working for Labatt's that winter, travelling the country with a group doing a Labatt Blue- Out of the Blue weekly promotion which aired live on Sportsnet on Tuesday nights. Part of our crew was Glen Gretzky, the youngest of the five children. Thanks to some Gretzky stats and facts I had been using as part of my weekly show, Glen contacted his father- who contacted Wayne, and a meeting was arranged post game in Buffalo after the Rangers came to town. Wayne secured a suite for all of us. We travelled via vans to the game, met Wayne post game and he asked whom among us were parents. Most of our crew put up our hands and he had a handful of programs from the Nagano Olympics. He had Walter sign them all, then he did personalizing each one to every child's name we gave him.
Prior to heading to Buffalo for the game our crew got a chance to spend several hours at the homestead in Brantford and after an unreal 90 minutes downstairs where tons of Wayne's stuff was stored and kept from over the years, I then had occasion to sit at the kitchen table and have a cup of tea with his mother, Phyllis and talk about Wayne the boy. What she shared with me and was still bitter about all these years later was how Wayne was treated in his hometown as his prodigy status grew by the week due to his insane scoring exploits.
Mrs Gretzky said that it was so bad the only solution was to get Wayne out of Brantford, send him to Toronto and find a JR B team he could play on. I asked her why maybe years later, after he had ascended to 'the Great One' status, why he would not call out some of the people who were so hurtful to him and by extension his parents. She said that's just not how he rolls. He always let his hockey stick do his talking and he never spoke out about any of his detractors, haters, jealousy-led attackers, never, throughout his life. Except one time, after our round robin game against the Czech's in 2002 in Salt Lake City where he had his outstanding and extremely accurate rant. Aside from that, crickets. And here we are again, Wayne is taking it from the cancel culture- from people who either don't know what happened- don't care because they've joined the psumani of hate and the Trump affiliation has fanned the invective.
13 years after that kitchen table conversation later I had occasion to work with Wayne in Ft. McMurray, Alberta for a weekend. As he and I watched the World Championships ( Canada/Sweden) in a room where he was signing 1000 pieces of memorabilia as I sat there talking hockey with him- at his request - I asked him about those early days in Brantford. About the haters and about the rant in 2002 and about how some people think Mario or Bobby Orr ( or someone else) was or is better than him and he said, 'I can't control what people think or want to say. I played every game to the best of my ability. What happened in 2002, that Slegr hit on Fleury at the end of the game, had that been reversed we would have been crucified in the press so I spoke out for those guys in the room. Not for me, but for them. That was a fight I had no problem taking on.' The one presented to him now by his non-public reaction to Trump's childish, nonsensical 51st state, Premier Trudeau BS- Wayne has ( so far) chosen not to speak.
Do I wish he would? Big time! But as his mother told me 26 years ago and has Wayne himself reiterated 13 years ago, it's just not how he rolls. I believe he is still a very passionate Canadian. You may not and that's fine also. I assume this note will spawn its own layer of hate, further to Wayne, maybe even myself, who knows. Listen, unlike Wayne, if this comment on him infuriates you to a hatred level- please unfollow, unfriend or block. If you'd like to discuss it further in person, not a problem. I'm easy to find. Just let me know. Sometimes discussions over a beer are way better. But that's how I feel both the pre game and his non communication- of Trump's grade school BS comments- went down.
hopefully you all can see if, if you have not already.
