I can't believe they let that no-talent clown, Shawn Paul or whatever his name is ruin Sting's "Roxanne" song. I couldn't even make out what that punk was trying to sing/rap/say at all! How does a punk who can't even speak English get on the Grammys??

Sorry, I'm just a big Sting fan!

They should keep that crap "music" in the jungle where it belongs. Sting and "Roxanne" is a classic!! You can't mix Sting with some punk gangster!

If I am not mistaken, Sean Paul is Jamaican & the language spoken in Jamiaca happens to be English

I didn't understand a word he was saying/singing/rapping. The whole live crowd didn't really know how to respond when he came out blabbering.

Wow- ignorance is bliss- isnt it? LOl!

It's called being open minded, if you open your ears and listen a few times, you can catch the patois (which BTW is a dialect), not blabbering. I don't think that the GRAMMY'S would allow a babelling idiot on stage like that. Obviously Sting appreciates Sean Pauls music and he wanted to re-introduce an excellent song (Roxanne) in a way that would make it new again and introduce it to those of us who haven't come acroos his music.

The preformance also appealed to me personally because I love dancehall and I think Sean Pauls music is creative and catchy- which kept me on my couch to listen to Sting perform too, instead of running to the bathroom.

Lumix, you're completely entitled to your own opinion! Free speech is alive, but keep a little thing called respect in mind! You said:

That is a harsh statement to make. I dont think someone of Sting's stature and talent would collaborate with a PUNK GANGSTER as you so eloquently put it. And I certainly don't want to encourage you to elaborate on the comment about keeping "that crap music in the jungle, where it belongs".

Sad...very sad.

Jamaican is also a language. Part of the Creole family, somtimes called Patois.

As for Sean Paul, just in case you thought he sang only in English, here are the lyrics to his song "Gimmie Di Light":

Just give me the light!!! (Yeah yeah)
Just give me the li-ight!!!! Just give me the light!!!
Sean-A-Paul, yo yo!!!

Chorus:
Just give me the light and pass the dro! Buss anotha bokkle a moe
Gal dem inna mi sight and I got to know
Which one is gonna catch my flow
Cause I'm inna di vibe and I got my dough! Buss anotha bokkle a moe
Gal dem lookin hype and I got to know!!!

Verse 1:
Could I be yuh protector yuh buff in every sector
Every man around dem waan tun yuh inspector
But yuh nuh let dem fret and a grill yuh wid nuh lecture
But dem power drill nah dem fuel injector
But dem a infector, Dizzy's collector
Nuff a dem a gwaan like dem waan come wreck ya
Dun out di part weh yuh gotta in yuh sector
Well yuh know yuh nah let dem guy deh affect ya, yo gal!!!

Chorus:
Just give me the light and pass the dro! Buss anotha bokkle a moe
Gal dem inna mi sight and I got to know
Which one is gonna catch my flow
Cause I'm inna di vibe and I got my dough! Buss anotha bokkle a moe
Gal dem lookin hype and I got to know!!!
Verse 2:
One two three four five again, situation gettin really live again
Gal dem waan fi hang out wid di playas and di riders dem
Di sight a dem, a dem seh dem tired of di liars dem
Spyers and tun hypers dem a would a get inside a dem
Di conner dem, especially di money hider dem
Watch di watch di gal but dem a time fi mek a bride a dem
Di night again, some a dem a move like a Spider Man
Gal dem seh dem nah open wide again, yo

Chorus:
Just give me the light and pass the dro! Buss anotha bokkle a moe
Gal dem inna mi sight and I got to know
Which one is gonna catch my flow
Cause I'm inna di vibe and I got my dough! Buss anotha bokkle a moe

Having said that, I like some of his music as well as Sting's. Sometimes good old Gordon Sumner gets on my nerves too, but that's just life.
I am going south today, and the funny thing is one of the local DJs asked me to bring him down some North American rock music when I return, as he only gets the Spanish and Rap music locally. There is enough music to go around for everyone. Not everyone likes yours just like you can't enjoy everyone else's.
As the old saying goes, live and let live.

So what the heck does the al this gibberish song verses mean? Nothing?

Bottom line - these rappers come and go. Remember Vanilla Ice, Mace, MC Hammer??? Now we just laugh at them.

I have to admit when I saw that blabbering fool come out and try to fit in with Sting, I started laughing a bit too.

But it is definitely is definitely sad that Sting's song was ruined tonight.

I enjoyed the obvious emphasis on mixing old school with new. It's interesting to hear a new arrangement of an old classic, or a new hit with the addition of a seasoned master. I love the Foo Fighters and the addition of a true piano virtuoso was wonderful. Did you see his fingers fly on that keyboard?????

Hopefully this will assist Lumix in his reading and comprehending skills! And if you need a translator to explain in SLOW english, exactly what some of the lines mean- jsut ask:

For example:

PATOIS: Buss anotha bokkle a moe
"english" translation: Bust another bottle of Moet (A champagne, I do believe).

PATOIS: Could I be yuh protector yuh buff in every sector
Every man around dem waan tun yuh inspector

Translation: Could I be your protector, your buff (man) in every sector (section of the club, for example- meaning he wants to be this girls body guard- for her to feel safe around him cuz he's a Big Mon!)

Every man around her/ them wants to turn into your inspector.(which basically means that she is a hot girl and all guys want to check her out and ask her questions, like those annoying guys at clubs who insist on "pssstt"- ing a girl.

Well folks, there you have it!

Yet the entire live audience went dumbfounded when this clown came out and tried to mesh with Sting. What a major mis-match.

Why listen to music when the artist(?) can't even communicate the words properly? What did all his verses mean in real English?

Lumix.
The music talks to the people it is directed at. Most of them come from different backgrounds and the music has evolved to suit them. Yes, sometimes it does include gangsta rap, but on the most part it just gives them a voice they don't hear in the mainstream.
Not too many people who listen to this music could sit through a Sting song either.

I'm sorry- but I do believe that the entire live audience was made up of mostly musicians and people between the ages of 18- 30, which I believe like Sean Pauls music. His record sales should also explain that he is VERY popular.

I think that if you were to go to a country/ island where they speak and sing in a different language or dialect than you- you'd feel like a dumbass- he communicated his words properly in PATOIS.

I cannot believe you?! LOl.

Sean Paul probably could sing it 'properly' but chose not to. If Sting did not like it, he wouldn't have been there. There are lots of artists doing covers of songs people may feel are sacred. Each new artist will do it in their own style, otherwise what is the sense in just trying to imitate the original?

Oh Yes Massa. Can I clean your white sheets today?

Seriously. Sting and the Police were heavily influenced by Ska music which is a product of Caribbean culture. His collaboration with Sean Paul is no different than Madonna hooking up with Brittney Spears. It's called trying to be 'hip' with the younger crowd to sell more records.

Bottom line: a classic song by the legendary Sting was ruined tonight by some no-name gang banger punk.

Maybe this Shawn Paul's music is ok if you actually knew what he was trying to say and perhaps he has some good rythms but they really shouldn't have put this fool with Sting.

Lumix.

I was in Cuba at Christmas. Met up with some younger Canadian guys. White boys from Peterborough. They knew all Sean Paul's songs and words, as did many of the local people. In your eyes he is a fool and Sting is a legend. To others Sean Paul is the man. You can't argue with people's selections, they are just different from yours.
