In a van down by the river
SOCIAL SECURITY:
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the
Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be completely voluntary.

2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual incomes into the Program.

3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year.

4.) That the money the participants put into the independent "Trust Fund" rather than into the
General operating fund, and therefore, would only be
used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program,
and no other Government program, and,

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.

Since many of u s have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month -- and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to "put away," you may be interested in the following:

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent "Trust" fund and put it into the General fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the Democratically-controlled House and Senate.

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?

A: The Democratic Party.

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the tie-breaking" deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the U.S.

Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?

A: That's right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive SSI Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!

Along the same note I heard that the Canadian Government introduced income tax during the second world war to generate income to be used towards the war effort.

Guess after the war was over they thought, HEY look at all this money! woohooo can you say Gulfstream G5???

Can you say: Health care? Education? Highways? Military? etc., etc., etc.

People who want to get rid of income taxes are the same people that will be the first to bitch and whine when they're having a heart attack and find out there are no hospitals...

The health care in the system definitely sucks ..... the cost of prescription drugs is so unreasonable because drug companies know most of it's covered by insurance. Most get royally screwed.

Its the same with car insurance. Many body shops will charge you less if they know you are paying for the repairs out of your own pocket rather than if an insurance company is footing the bill.

People think it doesn't hurt anybody if they overcharge "pooled funds". Unfortunately this attitude results in ruination of the system, be it public health, property insurance or employment insurance.

Factually incorrect.

The government introduced Income Tax as a temporary measure to raise money for WWI.

My guess is that the debt from The Great War has not been paid yet.
This must be the Apple version of my posting! :p

i wont use the canadian health care system even though it is 'free', have you been to a hospital lately?

education is funded by property taxes so i'm not sure how that is relevant

highways are funded by a number of provincial taxes, so again not relevant

the military is a moot point, who really cares about that? it could be outsourced to a few pakistani security guards and nobody would know the difference

bottom line is that canada is a great country to live in if you are poor, particularly an immigrant, you get treated like gold and everything is free paid for by suckers that actually work for a living

ACtually the concentration of purchasing drugs with a central buyer has resulted in drug prices much lower than what the drug companies would charge - so this is wrong.

Note the Americans want to buy drugs at Canadian prices. Given the rise in the $CAD our prices might go up also thogh.

Actually, I'm talking from the US perspective as I live down here in the States (and think about moving back all the time).

The fact Americans are looking to buy drugs in Canada underlines the point. They're the SAME DRUGS manufactured by the same companies. Costs for these drugs are 3x the cost than the prices in Canada. Even with the low USD, buying the same drugs in Canada is still more cost effective.

Most of the time, the pharmaceutical companies own patents which allow for somewhat of a monopoly and the profit margin is quite high because those under insurance usually only have to pay a relatively small co-pay amount and the insurance company pays the rest.

Sorry about the facts on the introduction of income taxes for the second world war. I knew it was WWI or WWII. COuldn't remember which....

As stated above: a lot of our income taxes get blown away on various NEEDLESS support systems.
