I had a point of contention with my cousin, he claims the The Hip are Canada's REM. I disagree, Stipe and Downie's POV on their lyrics are vastly different. Stipe uses his lyrics to exorcise his inner demons and to point out society's foibles, Downie is a narrative writer with a vast knowledge of Canadian lore.

Bobcaygeon is a beautiful song based on a dark moment in Toronto's history. In the late 30's Antisemitism became almost mainstream and the KKK was at the height of it's power. They were slowly taking over municipal politics. The started a riot when KKK thugs disrupted a baseball game at Christie Pits between Toronto's Jewish and Italian communities. They thought they had the support of Toronto's Chief of Police, they didn't. There actions were condemned by three levels of government, a crackdown followed and the KKK were driven from the city. The day changed Canada's cultural outlook and one of the player's taking part was a young Johnny Lombardi.

Gordon Downie has tremendous courage for attempting another tour. Joe Pesci is correct, 2016 sucks big fuckin big elephant dicks!

I like to think of Gord Downie as a sort of modern-day Canadian Woody Guthrie. :) His lyrics will live on and he will be missed.

But he's not gone yet guys! "Let's just see what tomorrow brings"

Never been a fan of theirs. Always felt they were far more overrated than they should have been....that being said, this news is nothing short of TRAGIC! (no pun intended).
It's so sad. He's sooooo young. To have his wife survive it, only to be stricken by cancer as well. Man, it really sucks!!! Just been thinking about him ever since I heard the news yesterday. I have no intention to try to get tickets to see their final tour. I do hope that he lives a long life before it finally takes him. B U M M E R!!!

Yeah, I feel exactly the same. Always thought they were just CanCon filler.

Very sorry to hear he has cancer, but the hip are still one of the most dull and boring bands on the planet. Gord's rare moments of lyrical interest cannot compensate for his bad singing and crap backing.

Exactly! FWIW, I'm just starting year 19 post diagnosis for what was originally thought to be glioblastoma...and I don't intend on checking out anytime soon.
The difference between you and Gord is that he definitely has a glioblastoma. You were fortunate to have a different kind. Congratulations for being cancer free btw.

For adults with more aggressive glioblastoma, treated with concurrent temozolamide and radiation therapy, median survival is about 14.6 months and two-year survival is 30%. All he can do is hope but those aren't very good odds.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of music do you like? While I understand The Hip isn't to everyone's liking but to call them one of the most boring bands on the planet is ludicrous.

The fans who attend the sold out ACC and other Canadian stadium shows disagree with you. I've been lucky to see them many times and hope to catch them during their farewell tour.

I like anything that's good! Subjective I know. For example, in the spirit of this board...
