I am not a huge fan of statistics , i find it real hard to take them seriously.
Does this hobby put you at higher risk of contracting STD`s? Yes it sure does.
"Chances are the girl you meet at a bar hasn't already had sex with 5 or more men that day"
We can`t generalize like this. You don`t know the life story of the girl that you meet at a bar.
How can you possibly know she did not have sex with several man that day?
Look at it this way, for example a prostitue has sex with 10 man in a day using condoms and a regular girl, that u meet at a bar, has sex with 2 guys in one day without using a condom.
Wich one do you think is at higher risk?
We can put any spin we like on this but in the end it boils down to one simple truth: there is no way in hell that you can determine if a person is HIV+ or not.
When i was younger i met some really screwed up girls and i mean really screwed up.
And this where girls from good family , most of them loaded with money and they would sniff coke all day and fuck guys left and right.
This so called " regular girls" have this fake sense of security regarding sex. Since most of the times this guys they are humping are either college friends or long time friends, they do not take in consideration HIV, so they get drunk and high and hump all day with no protection.
In general people in this hobby tend to be a little more scared and take more precautions and the same goes for working girls.
Also keep in mind that sex is not the only was this virus is tranmitted , in fact if i remeber correctly, on the article regarding this girl with HIV, it sayd she was an ex drug user, most likely an heroin addict.
So in theory are we at a higher risk? yes but ultimately the reality of it all it`s a little different.

"Early studies suggest that Canadian female prostitutes are no more likely to be infected with HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases than other women, unless they are also intravenous drug users.[4] (W Darrow. Prostitution, Intravenous Drug Use and HIV-1 in the United States. In M Plant, supra, note 1.) Studies also show that in their sexual relations, sex-trade workers use condoms more consistently than other populations similar in age, race, and sex. [5] Further, with respect to female hookers, the fact that the transmission of HIV from female to male is so difficult would suggest that the sex trade is unlikely to be a source of the spread of HIV/AIDS. Early studies of men who use female prostitutes confirm this; they did not reveal a single case in which a client was infected by a prostitute. [6] It is far more likely, particularly in the current legal context, which excludes sex-trade workers from the protection of the law, that prostitutes are at risk from their clients."

Also keep in mind that this girls are more at risk from us then we are from them, since HIV is much easyer to transmit from male to female then it is from female to male.
