I would really appreciate if you guys can share some good long term workout programs to follow in the gym or at home that have worked for you.

I recently had my assessment and my gym is recommending a 28 session with trainer for 6 months @ $2,100. This seems so excessive and there are so many workout routines out right now on the internet and I need some help and do not know where to start. I get so overwhelmed that I just go to the gym and run + elliptical for 30mims.

I know I'm copying the other diet thread but would appreciate some advice and I don't want go crazy over what i eat but eat in moderation + balanced diet and train 3-4 days a week 1hr/session. Thanks for any advice.

Yes.....well ain't that a coincidence.

Isnt that nice THEY think 28 sessions should do it...... At $75/per

Trainers typically get $50.... So the gym is looking to make 25 / bucks a session off your trainers back.

What happened??? Did you dress like you were made of money...... :)

Go swimming in a public pool regularly. That will save you
all that money.

Must have been the questionnaire form prior. I think it was my occupation. But thanks for advice on the cost, it helps put it in perspective...

!!!! Best workout advice a guy can give. Swimming is an outstanding all-body workout that burns fat, builds long muscle and improves cardio. Its low impact/no impact, is highly addictive, and can be done into your 80's.

Weight training would build muscle and decrease body fat, especially if it targets the core. Chest, back, legs and stomach exercises are excellent for that. Additionally, you could take one or two personal training sessions in order to get familiar with the machines and lifting techniques. Failing that, you could hit up one of your buddies to help with your workout regimen and motivate you...

Lol, of course they do:rolleyes:. This is how the gym makes the real bread, off PT. I bet they "recommend" this for 98% of the people that get their "assessment"
Save your loot and just lookout for a workout partner within your gym. You would be amazed how much you can change your physique & fitness level just by lifting with a partner 3-4 times a week 1.5hrs a day. Within 4 quick months you'll look and feel like a new person. Of course eating better also helps.

If you're willing to suck it up, I found insanity awesome. Mainly cardio with abs the main focus, also relatively cheap.

Watch your diet. Diet is 70%. Up your protein intake from a variety of sources. Do a lot of cardio if your just starting up again. It will open your gate and increase your metabolic rate. Strength training is incremental in building muscle and burning fat. I prefer swimming outdoors in warmer months. Do a lot of functional stuff. Pushups, pull ups, dips, stability and core stuff. You can only benefit from training it is a good investment. I wouldnt start off with too many sessions. I will work with a trainer periodically but normally prefer to wait 2 or 3 months to get back into routine. The key is to learn things you dont already know. There are tonnes of information sources online to aid in building a simple beginers program. Intensity is key in seeing results. Your focus should be proper rest and nutrition.

Mark Rippetoe's basic beginner weightlifting routine is called Starting Strength.

Check out the Lifts link, and the Program; will take about 10 minutes to read. You might want to write down the A and B routines and take the list to the gym the first few times you go.
I just saved you $2100. :)

Do something active you enjoy and the time flies by. Some people like routine so they can follow an regimen, while others cannot.
I started playing hockey last year after 10+ year hiatus and I love it! I may have only lost 5lbs but toned up and my clothes fit better.

There are a lot of different factors that should be taken into account when one is trying to set up a workout routine.
One thing I would recommend if you have never been to a gym before get a trainer but do not get a trainer for 6 months get a trainer for 1 month and 1 session a week so you get your feet into the gym and comfortable with the machines and the exercises. A trainer for a month should cost you $300-400.
If you want message me and I can give you advice on exercises and workout routines.

The gym typically gets $50. Trainers get the $25 or less. Been there, done that.

I train people in their homes for a living, and can't recommend a routine because you haven't given us enough information. How old are you? How fit are you? What is your body type? What is your diet like? It goes on forever. Don't get the gym trainer. 95 % of them don't know what they are doing so they will just get you exhausted. You should be getting stronger, fitter and more energetic as time passes.

I'm 33yo, 5'10" at 39% bf. For fitness level I finished all of the exercises the trainer had me do but needed rest in between. I can hold a plank for 90sec and do 16 pushups w/o rest. Yes my diet could use lots of discipline. This extreme core killer workout video below is one of my favs and an hoping to find similar ones on here to rotate through.

http://youtu.be/83YoRPB3P2A takes me 20-25 mins to complete
