I am looking at the prospect of moving as an educator in an area that is high in demand all over the place but just wondering anyone have any recommendations as to what is a good region/state to move to just for a change of scenery, I am highly considering Virginia or Arizona.

Bith great states to live in

Just pick a growing area and go for it.

Vegas is still growing But now ironicly it seems Western New York, with is declineing tax base, pays handsomely for teachers.

The common folk here are pretty decnt people. They band together and help eachother in times of need. Family is a big deal to most folks and we do love them Bills.

Where ever you decide to land you will find alot of supportive people.

I have friends in vegas
2 are teachers, one an administrator.

Pay wise it is less then here, but a ton of opertunity. As a special ed teacher you likely will be placed quickly

You need a masters to move up there
but a bachelors is enuff to get started.

yeah you need to have teaching certification in that state which you are going to work in, I will have one soon from New York state which has agreements with 30 other states that also recognize it all ya need to do is take their teachers test within a year which are not difficult, I didnt want this discussion to go into teachers and salaries blah blah blah, but whats a fun area of the US for a single guy in his early 30's to move to :)

As ex-New Yorker in New Orleans ....

It really depends upon your interests ...

Long Island is a great place to live.

New Orleans is fun and entertaining.

South Florida is not my cup of tea but many love it.

Vegas ... :)

As Flower says it depends. I am sure there are many options open to you, since you are in education. Do you like large, urban, cosmopolitan cities? Are you more comfortable in a small city or town? These days particularly, your politics may have a bearing on where you would rather live.

If you haven't done much travelling in the U.S., it might be a good idea to visit a few locations, to get a feel for them.

P.S. From your handle, I assume you are from Liverpool. I'm from just up the road from there (Blackpool).

to answer the questions here, from what I have heard being employed by a school district is not going to be a big problem since there is a need for teachers especially in my field, I am more of a big urban city person or at least being close to a large urban area, a friend has suggested Arlington, Virginia as a great place to live, as for the politics yeah this is where it gets interesting in Canada i am a conservative but definitely not socially more of a fiscal one

banshie I am not actually from Liverpool but a supporter of the red football team in Merseyside hehee :)

What I would recommend is that you set down and really think about what is importamt to you. You say you like large urban areas. There is many times a very large difference between teaching in a city school and a suburban school that may be just a couple of miles away. there are many factors at least for me tat enter into the equation. How important is weather to you? If you can stand snow the western NY won't work for you. Are you young and expect to move around before you settle in or do you have a family. There are many questions you need to think about. Once you can answer some of them, they you can figure out what place meets your needs.

I'm a big fan of San Francisco and San Diego. Of course, cost of living is an issue in both, especially San Fran.

Alaska is hiring and the pay is excellent but then again you are in Alaska in the middle of nowhere most likely and everything costs double what you are used to, as for me living in a suburb but close to a major city is preferably ideal, being single and having no connections really here is great since I could just pick up and move, I am well aware of the social divisions and problems in the United States, having had a slight taste of it working in some really tough Scarborough schools which I am sure would be nothing in comparison to a tough inner city school, I think I am pretty much decided on northern Virginia as a place to go, just gotta do some reconaissance and check out the area this Christmas time.

Nice Dens
Fang has a point. Brainard ND has ice fishing 11 months of the year. And then two weeks of bad roads.

Hate to say it
but as a generalization all teachers are liberal. In that they want larger government subsidies. That is on a professional level. I am sure that many if not most are conservitive on a personal level.
