Go XP Pro or stick with W2K

Just curious about the feelings & experiences of those folks who upgraded(?) from W2K to XP Pro. A good move or a move that you now regret? What was gained and what was lost?

No. don't do it!

W2KPro is not a cow like XP or XP Pro.

If you have a PII 350MHz and up with 128M RAM you can run WK2k at a decent pace. And, WK2K Pro does have most of the functionality of the XP series with more stability and without the problem of activiations.

If you don't have a PIII 800+ with at least 256M RAM and try to run XP series, you can be waiting till the cows come home between executions..

Of course, a newer hard drive like a 7200RPM with 8M cache will work wonders as well (for either systems).

XP has a lot of multimedia functions that aren't found in W2K. If you have any interest in creating/editing video, XP will be useful.

I don't like the XP default settings for window appearance, Start Menu, filenames appearing without the extension ahowing, etc, so I switched them to the classic. Then again, I have 512 MB of RAM, and P IV processor, and I do a lot of video creating...

I hate to say it.... but I like XP. It is the first MS OS that I genuinely like.

I too must admit that I really like Windows XP (use Home Edition though I have used Pro as well). I use W2K at work and don't really like it - too slow and looks and feels too much like Windows 98. I have been playing with Linux as well (Redhat and Mandrake) and getting increasingly disappointed with the way it's now trying to emulate Windows with every new version. I'm really looking forward to the next generation of Windows - Longhorn as I understand it will be a new departure from the current versions. Looks pretty good from the alpha versions I have seen. I only hope that with this version Microsoft will eliminate the need for all the Service Packs and fixes by finally putting out a defect free OS (I'm not holding my breath).

I have a P4 2.4 GHz machine with 512MB DDR and work with graphics and now into digiatl photography and video.

Looked at the Mac G4 dual. Nice..... only it cost twice as much as a P4 with Windows XP ! And that real pretty LCD monitor costs even more!! Guess I'll stick with Windows 98 for awhile yet, it still does everything I want it to do.

Can it do this?

What you pay extra with a high-end power mac, you get back in more productivity. No more re-installing your OS every six months and then updating 942393213 critical updates on windowsupdate.com and rebooting it each time you update something.

No more e-mail viruses of the week, no more blue screens, etc, etc.

I was a Win 2000 proponent and was reluctant to switch but I did to xp Pro. not too much different but the firewire networking support is nice I had to disable some of the built in stuff to keep using the 3rd party software that I prefer but it runs about the same. I would have stayed with 2000 if it had firewire networking though.

That was my point exactly - it WILL be when hell freezes over that Microsoft will release software without bugs and security issues.

I agree totally that Mac has the upper hand when it comes to speed, stability and cutting edge technology.

Did you see what the SuperSite for Windows said about Panther's release?

http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/longhorn.asp

Bottom line: Sure, OS X is nice and XP is catching up but for the complete experience, you'll have to wait till we release Longhorn.

Of course by then, I'm sure Apple will have a new OS that'll blow Longhorn out of the water.

Stick with win2k - I use both for tech support reasons but as already stated win2k is less of a space hog and is just as stable

Thanks!

Thanks to one and all for the info provided on this thread. I'll be sticking with W2K on my next computer. I like the stability and most of you seem rather unimpressed with XP.

I thought the Apple comments were interesting. However, for my recreational purposes, their products are just too damn expensive. I shouldn't wonder but that cost will always keep them a niche product.

I've tried some variants of Linux in the past and may do so again in future. However, until it becomes idiot proofed, I guess we members of the great computer unwashed will continue to follow behind the Pied Piper of Redmond.

I wonder if anyone is on Terb is still using OS2. It seems to be getting support from such firms as Serenity Systems. I've got the disks for version 3.0 somewhere around here. Maybe some day, I'll try it out.
