GM Fuel Reading?

In a living hell
The problem with some GM cars, which I believe has been addressed in newer models, is that elemental sulphur sometimes crops up in gasoline as a contaminent, which isn't a big deal from what I understand. But it plays haywire with the fuel tank sensor in some GM cars, especially Cavalier and Sunfire apparently.
I have an older Achieva, which doesn't get driven much, and it has run out of gas before on me when the needle is at a quarter tank or half tank. I rarely drive the damn thing: my son who normally drives mentioned it happened to him a couple of times so he always treats it as it's almost on empty when the needle approaches the halfway point.
The problem gas could crop up from any gas station.
GM says it doesn't happen much.
I'm going on sketchy memory: TO Star had a big piece on it on Dec. 22, noted a couple of incidents when people ran out of gas while on the 401 or 400, can be scary and downright dangerous when you're doing 100 k and all of a sudden the car dies.

To James T. Kirk - thanx for CNW Release. This Fuel Gauge Problem is affecting more & more cars. My STS fuel gauge now bounces UP to 3/4 Full when I go below 1/4; and then moves on towards Full as I'm running out of gas! This also affects the onboard computer readings re: fuel left, mileage avgs. etc. No joy from GM Dealer yet - Offer to "Fix" for $500 or so - thanx gang & give my regards to Oshawa!

SUGGESTION: It occurs to me that: IF this problem is actually caused by a gasoline company additive's Sulphur Buildup on sensitive electronic readers inside Gas Tanks; then putting in a small can of Engine Cleaner Additive into the Gas Tank (they make some that specifically remove Sulphur & other CRUD from within engines - you just run it through while driving); might also clean up the Sulphur buildup on the electronic readers in the tanks???

If it works, it would be a Damn sight cheaper than all the "Dealer Fixits" I've heard about. Any Engineers or Petrochemists please comment on this!

As they said on Star Trek "Damnit Jim, I'm only a Doctor!"
