Al Gore says that Americans contribute more carbon dioxide to global warming than South America, Africa, and the Middle East combined. The cleanest American air in the last ? years was the day after 9/11, when air traffic was grounded. Although there have been great strides in reducing sulfur, and other polutants, through EPA guidelines for autos, the aircraft are years behind. The problem with cars, is that although some chemical emissions have been reduced, the gas mileage, hasn't been increased significantly enough, to make a reduction in carbon dioxide.

The best answer, short term, is bio diesel, whichis the closest option to being carbon dioxide neutral. Ethanol, which the politicians love, may be almost as bad as gasoline due to processing costs.
The question I have is how much of a contribution is from human activity and how much is from nature such as increased solar output, Volcanic activity, Naturally occuring forest fires, etc? The planet has undergone global warming and global cooling cycles throughout it's existence. The one thing you can count on is that the earth is a dynamic system that is constantly changing and it is plain arrogance to think that every change is because of us.

The entire US economy could run on methanol. Ethanol requires too much energy to produce and it diverts from food production. Here are the short strokes:
Methanol can be produced from coal (which the US has a 500 year supply of)
Its cheaper to produce than Ethanol.
Its cleaner.
It can be derived from many more sources.
Methanol fuel cell technologies can be used to power zero and near-zero emissions cars, buses and trucks.
Methanol is also considered a “superior” fuel for electric power turbines, providing an alternative to natural gas that significantly reduces nitrogen oxide emissions.
