I realize that you now live in Alberta. IMHO you might be able to get some of your money back by taking Extreme fitness to small claims court. IMHO the manager admitted that you cancelled. Maybe you can hire a paralegal or something to represent you in small claims court?Hybridel said:I know they have a copy of this letter... one of the managers I spoke with pulled up my file, and he admitted that yes I did cancel.. but I had to speak with someone else.
Worst comes to worst, I'm flying back to Toronto on my days off, and I'm not leaving until I get a copy.
I realize getting my $ back for the fraudulent charges won't happen... but that's my fault for losing the paper, all I want is for the charges to stop
hunter001 said:I am still confused. You said they are charging you for private training sessions and not the membership. Which is it? At some point wouldn't the private sessions be paid off (even if you already paid for them)?
Thats total bullshit!! I bet they never told you about these "private training" sessions, correct??Hybridel said:I just learned today ( after talking to a manager ) that they are charging me for PT sessions. He wouldn't get into details, since I had to talk to the training manager ( who of course wasn't available )
My contract consisted of a 1 year membership... and 15 PT sessions.
IMHO, they're just trying to jerk you around. What authority could the training manager actually have ? I would call Extreme head office if I was in your position. I think Extreme head office is based out of Thornhill.Hybridel said:I just learned today ( after talking to a manager ) that they are charging me for PT sessions. the gym was $76/month
and PT was $106.74/session
I paid for 3 sessions up front, as I wanted both my membership and PT sessions to be paid at the same time.
For whatever reason unknown to me, they are still charging me for PT sessions AFTER my membership was canceled. The original slip I got when I canceled showed that there was nothing outstanding.
I'm going to try calling this training manager again, and if he can't resolve this issue over the phone.. then I'm flying back to Ontario on my days off.. and I won't leave until I get a copy of that cancellation letter
Even Silerman could use Silverman, he was fired by CityTV over a year ago.spankingman said:Get a hold of PETER SILVERMAN at CITY TV He has a show SILVERMAN HELPS

I would never, ever, buy a gym membership via pre-authorized payments or credit card ... just tell the manager you'll pay 1 year up-front, or 6 months up-front, or you'll walk. Then give them cash and be done with it.
Cuts the bullshit, gives you the real all-in price, and prevents them from having any access to your account.
When they ask why, just tell them the truth - "you guys have ripped off a lot of my friends, and I don't want you to have my bank account".
In general, EVEN well known insurance companies, telephone companies, etc rip people off with pre-authorized payments and credit billing ... don't do it unless you absolutely have no other choice.
Question: Did you get the 15 PT sessions? IIRC when I belonged to a gym and purchased some training sessions I got the sessions up front, but was able to spread the payments over a number of months. If that's what's happened in your case then that would be why you're still getting dinged for payments even after your membership was canceled.Hybridel said:I just learned today ( after talking to a manager ) that they are charging me for PT sessions. I just pay for everything up front with a debit card.Sam Rothstein said:I am thinking of joining a gym, does anyne know a way to pay them that will not end up including them in my will 50 years later!
Fitness Connection on Donmills/Eglinton does this, I told them I wanted to pay for the year up front with cash, and they allowed it.larry said:This won't matter to the OP, but maybe to others. I've joined Fitness 365 on Ronson a couple of times over the last 3 years. Paid cash. when my time is up, it's up. That's it. No calls. No credit charges. I'll join again in November for cash. These are the type of gyms to supoort. Are there any others like this in Toronto?
Reporting your card stolen will not do anything more then a registered letter to the Extreme plus you have to go through the hassle of updating any pre-authorized debits with the new number.Hybridel said:I signed a 1 year contract, and purchased some training sessions.
the sessions were paid for when my membership expired, since I wasn't very happy with the gym I canceled the membership.
I went in, talked to a sales person who referred me to a manager that asked me why i was leaving etc etc.
I signed a paper saying effective immediately my membership would be canceled.
I moved to Alberta, and have since then misplaced the paper I got from the gym when I left ( my fault... but I didn't think a big company like extreme would openly rip people off )
Anyways, TD Visa says theres nothing they can do in terms of stopping the payments, let alone refund my money unless I can find this paper, or somehow get the gym to cough up another copy ( ya right )
after looking at that google link, it looks like I'm not the only one... and the BBB is aware, but has yet to do anything. How does a company get away with robbing people like this?
Looks like my only option is reporting my card as lost, and/or demanding a new card #
If I have to fly all the hell way back to Toronto to get this sorted out, it isn't going to be pretty
edit- found this link, http://www.gov.on.ca/mgs/en/ConsProt/STEL02_168949.html
but since I'm lacking proof of my cancellation.. looks like it's going to be a pain in the ass to stop the charges, let alone get my $ back
IMHO you're doing the right thing . Don't let Extreme get away with it.Hybridel said:Fitness Connection on Donmills/Eglinton does this, I told them I wanted to pay for the year up front with cash, and they allowed it.
The headoffice for extreme IS Thornhill (the location that is ripping me off)
After a week or so of calling every day, I've given up... the training manager is nowhere to be found, I just keep getting pawned off from one person to another then to voicemail.
A friend of mine who is in law school is going in tomorrow on my behalf, and if that doesn't work then I'll be flying back to Ontario on my days off and contacting a lawyer.
