How high will the price for gasoline go this summer???

I have heard it is expected to go up another 29% this summer

...record profits at the oil companies, and there is no gouging happening.. yeah right!

I just filled up for $1.21/L (regular)

I received an e-mail from a friend of mine telling me not to pump gas on May 15th. Apparently this e-mail is out everywhere. So, DO NOT PUMP GAS ON MAY 15TH! Let's boycott these gas companies.

This is the e-mail I received...

NO GAS...On May 15th 2007 don't pump gas.
April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight. On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places. There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up. If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companys pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day. If you agree (which I cant see why you wouldnt) resend this to all your contact list. With it saying, ''Don't pump gas on May 15th"

I've heard an interesting thought in the Colbert Report.

There was a guy saying that if the US had cars with European mileage, they would not need the oil from the OPEP!

how great would that be...

Let's hope the price of gasoline rises to $2/L. The oil companies have been producing mediocre profits, when compared to the banks. Exxonmobil had about $39B in net income on total revenues of $377.6B, i.e., about 10.3%. By comparison TD Canada Trust had $4.6B in net income on total revenues of $22.3B, i.e., 20.6%. Why can't the oil companies produce 20% profits?

I don't want to discourage consumer activism, but what good will not buying gas on May 15 do? The oil companies know that they will just double their sales the next day. The only thing you can really do is sell your car, or at least cut way back on driving. Car pool, bike, walk, take TTC. When people start to make real lifestyle changes, then demand will drop and prices will drop accordingly. A one day gas boycott will do nothing.

I wouldn't be surprised if I saw $1.40 for brief periods in Ontario... where prices are around $1.05 at the moment. That means that if you're seeing $1.20 in your area now, don't let $1.55 surprise you.

But that's cheap compared to Europe.

If that sounds painful to you, do what the Europeans do... buy a Diesel Smart Car or Diesel VW.

Nothing wrong with discouraging consumer activism that is pointless. Otherwise we should have encouraged everyone in New Orleans to all blow at Hurricane Katrina at the same time in order to keep it offshore. :)

Other than that you are 100% correct in that the only way to get the oil companies to reduce prices is to consume less of their product.
