Somewhere but not here.
Any ideas on a company that will do a decent job/price in Durham region. Heard mid-efficiency can't be made after Jan and mine is over 30 years so it's time.

Whatever you do, don't buy a Carrier, and don't get it from "West End Heating"

Not unless you like dealing with morons and a furnace that will break down all the time.

I bought a High Efficiency with variable speed DC fans and really noticed a difference in my gas and electric bill.

My HE furnace was installed by my neighbour's son but I can't divulge his identity because he does this stuff only for family and friends.

Get ready for two major disappointments. High efficiency is not really that highly efficient. Barely notice any gas bill savings. The life expectancy of an HE furnace is 15 years. Forget the 30 years you are accustomed to.

Leaning toward mid efficiency so i don't need screw up the ceiling/walls in the basement to get the ventilation to the outside.
Does that mean you will still vent through the chimney? Installing the HE furnace also screwed up my chimney because now the chimney is too large without the furnace venting through it.

yes.. mid efficiency apparently can still vent through chimney but high can't - need to run the ventilation line through to outside. From my understanding thru ceiling/walls and to exterior and because it would likely come out under my desk need to go out to the edge of the deck.

Only reason I'd really get High eff is resale value if i decided to sell. Otherwise the savings in gas is likely less than the cost to replace/fix ceilings and walls etc.

CTV news just had a feature on this. Mid-efficiencies will be banned soon and they do vent through the existing chimney. They also mentioned there is something like $10million dollars in rebates available:confused: on a new furnace. (All I got was a lousy $150 from Enbridge in 2006.)

Does anybody know the myriad of REBATES available on a new furnace?
You need to get an energy audit to qualify for all the rebates. The beut of changing the furnace now is that you can get the energy audit rebate AND the home improvement tax incentive.

Rebate Info...

gww,

Check your PM's.

Rebates are based on various levels of efficiency. Rebates for a 94.0% AFUE furnace with a brushless DC motor is $1300 (Feds and Ont) plus the OPA (Ontario Power Authority ) of between $250 to $400 and then for a 14.5 SEER air conditioner there is another $500 (Feds and Ont), and finally there is the money from the Home Renovation Tax Credit (take $1000 off your total allowable expenses, then 15% of that amount - ie if total allowable of $8,600 less $1000 = $7,600 x .15 = $1140 back on income tax.

Check this link to the Ont Government Home Energy Program

Note that in order to be eligible for the rebates you must have Energy Efficiency Evaluation completed by an approved auditor which will cost you $300 + GST for the initial audit. They will audit your home and make suggestions as to how you can improve the efficiencies and which rebates are applicable. Afterwards you will receive a $150 rebate (about 5-6 weeks) back. Once you have had the work done you get a re-evaluation (another $150 + GST) and they will do the rest.

They say that you should receive all the rebates within 120 days of the re-evaluation.

Look for companies that carry 'Goodman' units.

This is a company that make furnaces for a large number of the big name companies and therefore their units are lower priced for the same quality. Why but a copy when you can get the original.

I would rethink the central heating concept and consider using a NFG 98% efficient unit in each zone.

Figure one in the basement, one in the living room and or family room. One in each bed room. Now you have efficient zone heating.

ok.. thanks... i didnt know they had nat.gas units for each room. Will it work like electric baseboard heating (obviously not exactly like it, but a similar concept?). does that mean we have to gas up the whole house.. with gas lines accessing each room / zone? something i have to check out. seems alot of work.. but i wanna see the costs involved too. this is, obviously, completely new heating system to me. is this new?

Yes yo would have to have a gas line to each one and electric if you have a blower on it. Most of these little units are either direct vent or vent less.

I did a Google search of gas furnaces back in 2006. Here is a best to worse ranking from ConsumersReports.org.
