Sushi Island on College St. W. Best sushi for the money. I especially like their wild rice rolls.

Are we talking new age sushi or traditional authentic sushi?
New age is hard to guess because I just go for the buffet.

For authentic, there was a place in the beaches area that had amazing sushi, fresh sashimi and awesome tempura. Believe it or not, tempura is an art. Too much batter or not enough and the whole thing is a waste. Also when shopping for a good sushi, dont' think about price. Bang for buck is good for many but not for sushi. I don't like to gamble with the freshness of something like fish. Believe it or not, there are two sushi buffets that I go to that have okay sushi but the biggest draw is the freshness. Due to the high traffic, the fish is extremely fresh. Not once did I eat a piece of fish that tasted fishy. Also a misconception is that sushi will taste fishy. If you bite into a piece of raw fish and it tastes very fishy, it's either mackerel or old fish. Mackerel tastes like bait and the high volume of fish fat gives it a very fishy aura. Other fish dont smell so fishy so when you do eat one that is extremely fishy, beware. I am somewhat of a fish connosieur. A couple years back, I ate sushi at least twice a day for 8 months. It was what I dubbed the "sushi diet". I lost 80 lbs and a few thousand dollars. LOL

I've never tried Kaji but have heard rave reviews. Last time I was about to go, it looked like it was closed and there was some other sushi place beside it. Any confirmation as to whether it's still open for business?

try Fuji-U in the Sussex Center (Hurontartio and Burhampthorpe) in Mississauga. It's fanatastically expensive but I know of people that make the long drive from Markham for Fuji-U

Most N. American cannot tell if Korean, Chinese or Japanese are making the sushi, as long as they are Asians. Few Japanese in the GTA operate the many sushi places anyone, most are Koreans and Chinese.

To be honest with you, I dont' care if Sri Lankan had prepared my sushi. As long as it's fresh, tastes good and is authentic style.

Toronto Sushi

Toronto seems to have hundreds of sushi restaurants, but few that have really gone the fine dining route. I will try Kaji asap, but otherwise my picks would be;

Fine dining: Blowfish on King West
Pure Fish Quality: Sushi Inn on Cumberland
Best Hole-in-the-Wall: Japango on Elizabeth

Let the puns continue.

When to Japango about 2 years ago. Hair in salad and hair in edamame, never been back.

Blowfish is fabulous but pricy.

That sushi place in Etob on Queensway is highly rated (never been there) but on Fri and Sat nights, its a fpre-fixed menu only and I don't like being told what to eat.

As a westcoaster, Im very picky about about fresh sushi. There are few places in this town that serve really fresh cuisine. The place that I think is best (for both quality and price) is Sushi Yumei on Queen St East in the Beach. Long ways to go but worth it.

PS. I think Hero sucks. It was good in its day but their heads have become too big for themselves. The service is deplorable.

Kaji sucks! Over priced, not even vaguely interesting and trying to hard to be French modern decor, plus it's way in the f*ck out in Etobicoke.
Downtown try Ematei, Nami or Tempo if they ever reopen. Tempo is owed by gejin but chef is japanese. God I miss the Airport lounge on College. They had amazing stuff.
Or move to Vancouver where it's really good.
Hiro is another overrated place. Might as well have the sushi from Loblaws.

Once you have "all you can eat" the quality of the fish will go down because they buy in bulk. I still stand by my suggestion of Hama located right behind Pacific Mall at a Kennedy and Steeles. They are run by a japanese family, and still has my vote as the most authentic tasting japanese food around. Their menu is very limited, but all is good.

Kaji Sushi on Queensway consistently gets top marks. Going there again next month ... it's always a treat.

If you're in Vancouver, try Tojo's.
