I currently have ExpressVu and need to replace a receiver that is not working properly. I just found out about FTA (Free to Air) Receivers. Does anyone have any experience/recommendations? Thanks!

recommendations?

For starters, don't rely on FTA as your main source of television, unless you're prepared to go a day or sometimes days without service.

Homo, i have had some exposure to the ViewSat Ultra. Relatively easy to set up, and it uses a memory stick to download the new codes instead of using a hard wire connection. I saw an ad this week on the back cover of the 24 newspaper for an Ultra @ 139.00 including a USB key. I think the ad was for Tech Direct???.. but i'm not sure. Check it out yourself ....but as previously advised, there may be a few days of down time until the fix is avail. Aside from that.... it's all a go.

I personally think you might be too late. I'd wait until after the card swap is completed before spending any big dollars on this gear.

I gone through 5 receivers in 6 years, I think some of the manufacturer purposely slow down their support in order to sell the newer models.
You can almost count on your receiver for may be 1-2 years and has to replace with a newer model.
Right now I am using Captive Work 800S, cost me approx $140, support is good so far.Bought 3 months ago. New files comes up within 2 days once it's down.

CW line does provide excellent support.

I've owned.... Fortec Ultra, Ariza Extreme,Coolsat 5000, Viewsat Platinum, Viewsat Ultra, and Captive Works 800S.

For my liking I prefer the Viewsat Ultra and the Captiveworks 800( because of it's PVR capabilities). If I was in the market to buy today I would also consider, the Sonicview 360 Elite. It has some relationship with Viewsat. Just my 2 cents.

You may also want to make note of I69norm's advice.

Any recommendations for a PVR type box? My buddy has had the Dreamworks one for years and can record to Hard Drive and has wifi so you can download directly to the box (no PC necessary). But he says that one is end of life.

CaptiveWorks 3000 seems to support it. Is this any good?

Be aware there is a card upgrade going on right now. I don't recommend spending >>$500 on this hobby until the outcome of the card upgrade is known.
Wise advice!

I'm trying to find out how to hack an FTA receiver. I'm not a very tech savvy kinda guy so I haven't been able to figure it out by searching google.

Is it a simple thing to do? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Data you are so right with the Viewsat's.
I've had the vs2000 platinum for as long as i could remember and
it is a very simple yet stable reciever. The support is great for the VS's.
