The mean streets of Bloor West
Holy shit...I opened a bottle of wine a couple of hours ago and my kitchen is completely infested with those little bastards. It was clearly caused by my lazy treatment of my beer empties.

I left the wine open as a 'sacrifice' and there are lots of the little guys swimming or drowned, but they're all over the kitchen.

I'm gonna get some spray tonight and empty the can on the beer empties, so they don't fly away into a cloud when I move them tomorrow. I'll continue to sacrifice a perfectly good bottle of wine....anybody else recently have this problem, and what did you do??

Picked the flies out of the wine and finished the bottle.

Thank goodness not as bad as last year.

They still, however, bring back memories of Secondary Shool Biology Class!

try pouring bleach in your kitchen drains before bed, the flies breed in the water held in the traps.

LOL great idea! Spray toxic chemicals all over the beer bottles. Breathe in the fumes overnight. Then pick up the bottles covered in the toxic chemicals (be sure to hold them high, close to your face) and carry them to your car for disposal.

Or you could try the wine and soap in a dish. Which ever works best for you.

I have had a fruit fly infestation for over a week. I would put some apple sauce in a jar and let them fly in. Then I would spray the inside of the jar with a household cleaner. Must have killed 200 of these little guys.

They even got into my fridge but the cold basically kills them. I ended up wiping up about another 50 or so.

Hint: pour bleach down your drains (even the bathroom), that's where they manifest.

We sometimes get them in my SO's aviary. Since there are birds there she wont spray anything, she puts an orange which has been cut in half, in an empty margerine container with the lid laying near by, many times a day she will go in and quickly put the lid on, capturing them and releases them out back at the bushline.

Does anyone know where they come from?

Do they come from inside the fruit itself ?

I mean they appear out of nowhere

Kill those bastards!

- Gets a 2 liter soft drink bottle.
- Cut a slit across the bottle near the top. ( about 3 or 4 inches long )
- Place some apple or pear peeling inside. ( any fruit will do )
- Leave the bottle in the middle of the kitchen over night.
- The fruit flies will enter from the top of the open bottle.
- In the morning the bottle will be filled with fruit flies.

Now you get your revenge, shake the bottle until they are all shaken to death in their own food source!

I am a mean kitty!

The fruit flies lay their eggs in the fruit, and what you see are the hatchlings from the fruit.

Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
Take one of the small plastic/glass juice bottles, throw a piece of peach etc. inside, take a piece of paper and make it into a tapered funnel with a very small hole in the bottom (just enough room for one to get through).Tape the paper where it touches the top of the bottle to seal it....watch the flies accumulate inside.

The fruit fly population has increased drastically because of all that rotting garbage lying around. Now those flies are foraging for food in all our kitchens.
This Globe and Mail article outlines the best way to get rid of them.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/toronto/the-invasion-of-the-fruit-flies/article1248756/
The article hardly scratched the surface. This method worked very well for me last year:

Cut up some banana pieces and put into a squat drinking glass. (I suspect wine or vinegar would work as well.) Put on a cover of well stretched saran wrap. Poke holes in the saran of maybe 1/16 “ in diameter with a toothpick. Exact hole size is unimportant.

After many flies have been trapped, which is quickly, put the glass in the microwave for 12 sec.

The setup may then be re-used many times. But some holes may shrivel up and it may be needed to re poke the existing holes.
