Perhaps I haven't spent as much time in Florida as you have. Is it common in Florida for the police to rob people?
No, but they will let you have it for the slightest transgression. (Ask Alex Lifeson.)

Americans take their law and order way too seriously.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend hon, I know that things like this can happen just about anywhere unfortunately. My Sister was mugged last year in Puerto Vallarta and we were all in an uproar till we learned that she was walking home drunk by herself after 2am......in my opinion she is lucky that being mugged is all that happened and to be honest, that could have happened anywhere.
I have been going to PV every year for quite some time and have found it to be a wonderful place. I have never had any problems in any way shape or form,,,,mind you, I do use common sense ;)

i suppose you could walk around the projects at jane and finch on saturday night at 2:00 A.M. and probably not get hassled 9 times out of 10........but why would you bother when there are so many sane alternatives?

I just spent a week in Playa Del Carmen. Went off the resort plenty of times. No problems whatsoever. Just the usual hassles tourists face anywhere.

Come buy my crap, tip for this or that, and I was out after 10 pm plenty of times.

Here's a challenge. Have a couple of drinks and walk around in downtown Chicago or Detroit at night. You'll wish you were in Mexico.
Cops are preying on tourists in the US now?

Have you even been to Chicago? You're more likely to be bothered by aggressive panhandlers and intoxicated louts in Downtown Toronto than you are in Downtown Chicago.

The problem with Mexico is that it is full of Mexicans.

They will rob you another way, through heavy handed speed enforcement with outrageous ticket fees. For a perfect example drive along Route 4 between Tampa and Orlando. I once saw what looked like 30 motorcycle cops lined up behind a billboard waiting to catch speeders. The funniest part was at the time I was stuck in a traffic jam, there was no way anyone could be speeding.

I've been going to Cancun now just shy of 20 years-at least an annual trip but there have been several years in the past that I went as many as three times in one year. I've never seen a homeless person or a beggar, never been mugged, never been hassled by the cops. My friends and I have (on numerous times) stumbled onto the buses, drunk -never a hassle.
I've been to other places in the Carribean, Asia and Europe and I always go back to Cancun. I've clubbed in Pattaya, London, Manila, Ibiza -I prefer the nightlife in Cancun. For people that have NEVER been, it's easy to get hysterical about stories and rumors.
I don't know if anyone else can comment about the cops ,let's say in NoLa in the 90's. Please. It didn't even have to be Mardi Gras for you to get hassled by the cops.

Acapulco -different story, PV not a huge fan, same with Los Cabos, you can't pay me enough to go to Juarez, TJ or any other border town, but Cancun; and the Mayan Riviera area -I go every chance I get.
Jamaica and DR not my cup of tea -and yes I've actually been there. Bahamas, Bermuda and St Kitts -nothing to do -beach is beach as far a I'm concerned.

Cancun is a one stop destination -drinking, shopping, fine dining- some of the best restaurant outside Vegas , golf, water sports -fresh water and deep sea fishing, snorkelling, diving in the mangroves and even cave diving and of late -gambling. They didn't have casino gambling in Cancun for the longest time -they had cock fights and bull fights but no sportsbooks or casinos. Now they do. The service at any of the 5 stars is polished -everbody speaks English, most staff are multilingual. You can't compare the service to any other Carribean destination. Even if it's a Riu or Bahia -the Cancun resorts are way better served than a 5 star Riu or Bahia anywhere in the Carribean.

Cancun isn't a cheap destination either. DR is cheap, Cuba even cheaper but most of the 5 stars in Cancun aren't cheap. So I don't go there for the price. I really do like the city and their beaches.

Now -if you're a heat score, a beligirent loud mouthed obnoxious drunk or just a general asshole -you can be anywhere and get into trouble. Plus it's funny how a lot of tourists lose "situational awareness" when they're on vacation -that could lead to trouble as well. But this trouble isn't confined to just Cancun, I assure you; it's everywhere.

I tell people there all the time -No. Weed is illegal and God forbid you get caught with it. It's easy to get -but don't get caught. No. It is illegal to piss up against a wall.lol Can't think of anywhere where this is legal -but some drunks do do it -and are shocked when the cops hassle them.lol. Common sense, that's all.

Like I say -for those who have been, no explanation required. For those that have never -no explanation will do.

I'm curious where exactly in Cancun was you friend who got robbed by the cops? The only place in Cancun i really wouldn't go to at night is at Plaza 21 -where BlackJacks is. It's the local Red Light district in Cancun. That where some shady people, who btw cater to the tourists, can be found for some out- of- resort entertainment -ladies, mind altering substances and such.

But that is your choice to let them rob you.... don't want to pay the "outrageous ticket fees" (which are pretty low compared to some countries out there)? Then either don't speed or convince the politicians to change the laws.

I love dos XX's also, and I want to second your post. I have been to Cozumel several times a year for 15 years, and have walked the dark side streets at night, without ever being even remotely worried. Cozumel is an island, which makes it even safer than Cancun.

Last time I was in Cancun, one guy from our resort got his money stolen by the police while walkin home from the bar...he was right around 25 years old as well. Another guy got caught pissing against a wall, the cops demanded cash...he refused and spent the night in the drunk tank. I swore off Mexico after those two incidents, well not those two alone but that was the breaking point for me. Really not interested in places where they say it's not safe to leave the resort.

Yep, why should you not be allowed to piss on the sidewalk. It is Mexico, not.

I've been to Mexico about 10 times in the last 8 years and have always felt safe, even late at night. (Playa Del Carmen, Cancun and Cozumel).

If the flight was cheaper, I would spend more of my vacation time in Thailand instead.. (I've been twice in the last 2 years (3-4 weeks at a time). Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, Krabi and Chang Mai.. There's something for everyone.. The women (non-P4P) treat you like gold.

Even P4P is dirt cheap and pretty safe For 2 nights (Approx $3000) with an escort in Toronto, I could spend a month in Thailand with a different woman every night or even two women at the same time if I so choose.

Giggity...
