BREAKING: Rupert Murdoch's Fox Corp suffers a crushing defeat as a New York court rejects their request to dismiss a lawsuit brought by voting systems company Smartmatic against Fox News.
And it gets even better...
Smartmatic is suing Fox for over $2 billion after the right-wing news network allegedly knowingly broadcast false, damaging information about the company's software after the 2020 election.
Fox has absurdly insisted that the lies — which helped boost the network's ratings — were fair game and "newsworthy" because Donald Trump and his minions were pushing them at the time.
"We will be ready to defend this case surrounding extremely newsworthy events when it goes to trial,” Fox told The Hill. "As a report prepared by our financial expert shows, Smartmatic’s damages claims are implausible, disconnected from reality, and on their face intended to chill First Amendment freedoms."
What's more, Smartmatic has issued subpoenas to key members of Fox Corporation's board of directors.
Fox has had poor legal luck fighting back, as just last month they lost a bid to acquire information about federal charges against Smartmatic stemming from alleged bribery in the Philippines.
So far, this legal war is decidedly tilting in Smartmatic's favor.
Given the fact that Fox agreed in 2023 to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787 million to settle a different defamation lawsuit, the odds of this ending poorly for Fox seem high.
