Sounds like the kind of place I should be visiting on my next vacation (coming up soon). How is crime there ... is the chance to get ripped off/mugged relatively low or high?

I'm from Trinidad and have many friends and family members who still live there. I've also travelled extensively in the Caribbean and have met many wonderful (and beautiful) people on those islands.

Seriously guys... escorts in other countries might be drawn to white travellers because they smell foreign currency, but why would anybody expect civilian women to feel the same attraction? West Indian women get all the loving they need from West Indian guys. Don't assume that just because you're white that you're one up on the locals. That is just ludicrous.

Does anyone else have any comments on sex tourism in Costa Rica versus say Cuba? Are opportunities more limited in a heavily Catholic country like Costa Rica?

And is the water in the Dominican Republic and Cuba as perilous as it is in Mexico?

I've never been to Costa Rica so can't comment on that. I have been to Cuba and Dominican Republic numerous times. You do not drink the water there. Buy the bottled stuff. As far as the chics go, go to cuba, they are hot and easy to find. Varadero is not the place to go because that is the number one tourist area and Fidel wants to keep it clean for the family crowd. Go to Santiago or Santa Lucia. I've had wonderful times in both of those areas.

alphaBIT, crime is low in Puerto Plata but quite high in Santo Domingo. I feel much safer walking in Puerto Plata at night than I do in my own neighborhood. I had extensive conversations with the gringos who live there and all of them agree with the low crime rate. Foxhound, I have been to Costa Rica and I had a very good time. I found many pretty girls all of them were quite nice to me. However I can't compare to Cuba because I've never been there. The water in Puerto Plata is served bottled, so it is safe.
