In the Globe & Mail today (Saturday, August 21) there was a small review about an Indian restaurant in Missisauga called Saravana Bhavan. The review piqued my interest so I went and tried it out.

In short, two thumbs up! The place is located at the south-east corner of Eglinton & Hurontario in a strip mall. The restaurant itself is at the north end of the mall. What sets this place apart from other Indian restaurants in Toronto is that it specializes in Southern Indian cuisine that also happens to be vegetarian. (Most Indian restuarants in Toronto tend to be Northern cuisine.) Now for me, an affirmed meat-lover, it's really saying something when I give a thumbs up to a veggie place. But the food tasted good and I walked away feeling quite satiated.

The service was simple and quick. A nice touch was a pitcher of water on each table, so you don't have to keep asking for more. An oddity was the use of metal - the cups, the plates (which are more like trays), the "dishes" are all metal. It's all stainless steel so there's no metallic taste to the food or anything, but it was a first for me being a place sans porcelain. It was kinda neat actually.

When I looked through the menu, I really had no idea what most of ths stuff was. For example, one of the appetizers is Rava Kichadi which is described as "Roasted sooji cooked with onion, tomato, carrot, green chili & green peas, sauteed with flavoured herbs served with chutney & sambar." Sooji? Sambar? I felt like a tourist in a very out-of-place way. Nonetheless the server took pity on me and gently made a few recommendations which turned out to be excellent choices. (I ended up having Channa Batura which was a large piece of puffy bread served with chick peas and onions. Doesn't sound like much but it was quite tasty!) Next time I'm there I'll probably just pick stuff at random out of the menu because I'm sure it'll all be good.

There is another South Indian restaurant in TO called the Udupi Palace at 1460 Gerrard E. I try to have at least one, long lunch at this place during my trips to TO. I will have try the one in Miss during my next trip (in a couple of weeks). Thanks Xarir!

Those are the correct terms for the peoples that were living in N. America before Columbus. People and food that come from the country named India, as xarir correctly stated, are called Indian. Quite simple, really.

Au contraire.

I was teasing MM, as I believe he misunderstood the ethnicity of the restaurant. If HE was joking with his post, then he got me.

Should we do a poll on "who-got-whom"? My vote goes to MuffinMuncher.

Slightly Indian

On Saturday my wife and I tried a new restaurant in our neighborhood. We live near Coxwell and Danforth Av which has very few decent restaurants in the immediate vicinity. The restaurant is called Melanie's Bistro & Patisserie, on the north side of the Danforth, a block and a half west of Woodbine. It is run by an Indian or Pakistani family.

The very decent house merlot is only $6 per glass which is very underpriced. The food was exceptional and not expensive. I had fusilli with chicken in a light cream sauce with corriander, carmelized onions, mushrooms and a few other sliced veggies / red peppers and a touch of curry ($14). The chicken was plentiful, moist and delicious, and the sauce / veggie mix was really exceptional with corriander and curry flavours blending magically with the carmelized onions and large chunks of succulent chicken. Probably the best pasta dish I've had in the last 5 years. This is what I would call international / indian because it only had that small hint of curry to suggest there was anything Indo-Pak about it. If the proprietors hadn't been visibly Indian, I would have thought someone had simply been creative enough to blend a touch of curry and corriander in an exceptional pasta dish. My wife had blackened salmon with some kind of excellent beet medley appetizer and a lentil slaw. Again, it only hinted at Indian with the lentils so it is more about international fusion.. My wife also enjoyed her meal immensely. For dessert we both had an absolutely divine walnut caramel cheesecake that was probably the best cheescake (only $5) I've ever eaten. There is nothing fancy about this place but it is clean, comfortable and the service was great. And the food was really special. You can have 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine and 2 desserts for about $80. If you order a bottle of wine, add about $12 - $15. It will probably be the best $90 to $100 you will spend on food.

sounds good, reminds me of the "meals" restraurants in India where you would sit down and be served a set meal (a "Thali") with three or four different little dishes of veg and sometimes a meat, rice, and poori bread.

The vegetables and meat (if any) was all you can eat, the poori an extra few cents if you wanted more. All the dishes were served in small stainless steel cups all on a larger stainless steel plate.

Sometimes these all you can eat meals would cost 25 cents per person, it was crazy.

And no, I didn't get sick, not even for part of a day, and I was in India for 3 months.

I ordered take-out from Udupi Palace once but they are strictly vegetarian. If you'd like to try a very decent and consistent Indian Buffet in the east end with Tandoori chicken, butter chicken etc, walk about 35 feet west on Gerrard to Siddhartha (sp?). It is right next door to the Udupi Palace and I've been there many times. So far so good.

There is a place in Malton, called SWEET INDIA. They serve really good "channa bhatura" (deep fried bread and chick pea's basically). It's on Airport Rd (Airport Rd and Derry) north of Derry - 2nd lights, turn left, first shop on the corner. Hard to find parking sometimes, but worth it, in my opinion.

If you're downtown, there is a place called SUKHI'S BIRYANI HOUSE. They serve "THALI" meals (meaning, you pick a meat, or a main, and then two sides from a selection of 6 and they throw in some other stuff. Be sure to order fresh "naan" and Sukhi will make it in a clay oven and serve it to you fresh. These guys are downtown, Yonge and Bloor. South of Bloor on Yonge - its a little side street off the East side, it only goes East. It's like the third or forth shop in. Lots of parking since there is a GREEN P next to it also.

(I'm directionally challenged, so hopefully you get in the area).

If anyone needs more details, let me know, I'll try my best.

Good Eats!

Hi, Saravana is great as a South Asian vegetarian. You may also like Madras Uduopi Palace behind the Sussex centre, and for regular non veg Indian, Bombay Bhel (Just across Saravana at North side of Eglinton, The Host at 33 Center, and Nirvana at Brunnel are great. I also discovered an amazing Buffet, Tandoori Flame (8150 Dixie), great fun and environment. Cheers.

Forget about Toronto. Brampton is awesome. A ton of places with 8 dollar lunch buffets (price of Tim Hortons). I go regularly.

Best meal - Sweet Palace - $6 - veg - Thali plate - corner of plaza Peter Robertson/Torbram. I go at least once a month. Just point to 3 items, they will bring to your table in a few minutes with fresh naan.
