You can't go wrong with City of God.
And just to mention some that haven't already been mentioned ....
If you liked Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, check out the recent Chinese marital arts movie "Hero". For something off-beat ... Talk to Her by P. Almodovar. Other recent Spanish films - Nine Queens, about pair of con artists, or The Crime of Padre Amaro. For something in German, try Nowhere in Africa, 2002 Oscar winner for best foreign language film.

nobody likes american films?
There are some good American films, mostly independents. For the most part Hollywood produces crap. It's a shame, IMO. Years ago Hollywood made a good product, but it seems they don't care anymore. Perhaps they don't have to, as the public seems to gobble up whatever they are fed.

- "Love Me If You Dare" (called "Jeux d'enfants" in France) came out on DVD last week an is about this boy and girl who play this game of dare back and forth throughout their lives growing up as a way to cope with the pain in life. Ignore the whole "it's a twisted version of Amelie" marketing bullshit because the two movies are nothing alike.

- "2046" from China/Hong Kong. A romantic drama that you might be able to find in some of those great video stores on Queen St. West. A writer arrives in Singapore for starting a new life, which is nothing but counting time at dealing tables. His name is Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Leung). A mysterious woman, only known as Black Spider, quietly walks into his life and brings back his lost memory, the memory of the time he spent with an married woman named Su Li-Zhen (Maggie Cheung). Black Spider helps the writer to win back his money then he could buy a ticket returning to Hong Kong. She refused to share her past with him, except her name, which is also Su Li-Zhen (Gong Li).

There were rave reviews from Cannes. Accompany by a major ad campaign for 2046 in Paris few weeks back. 2046 posters were at every Metro stations and bus stops.
