Generally speaking I actually think wealthy people make good candidates for political office. Let's face it, if you had $250 million (US) you could do pretty much anything you wanted to. But Paul Martin chooses to be in the political arena because he has a vision for Canada and wants to do something about it. For all his money and financial freedom that he has, he chooses to do something he is passionate about. For the same reason, I think Ahnold in California was the right choice.

Politics doesn't necessarily attract the best & brightest, but it should. At the highest levels these folks are entrusted with running the country. The decisions they make affect all Canadians and have direct influence on how Canada is perceived on the international stage. This is not a task to be taken lightly and one that you want to be done only by very capable people. Wealthy people have generally (though not always) proven that they can succeed in difficult undertakings, so why not give them an even bigger challenge like running a country?

You make a good arguement xarir, and i agree fully in your analysis. But if you had $250 million dollars would you want to run for office?

Heres another question to those that care, why would someone like Paul M. or Arnold S. want this job? They are 'all that.' Some have fame and fortune, others like Paul just have fortune, yet they choose to take a position that at times is really not the best seat to sit in.

Look at the abuse PM Martin has taken since taken office. I am not pro or con to his running Canada. I just say if i had $250 million dollars.

Helloooooooo..................What would i do if i had that wealth? Thats a $250 million dollar question. When i win it, i'll get back to ya. --- Kev

considering that 1 of 5 Canadians live below the poverty line (as defined by the federal gov't), I believe wealthy politicians such as Martin to be an obscene insult.

on election day: throw the rascals out!
