If you're into speed, check this out....the Bugatti Veyron.....

Check out when James is describing the test track, the straigtaway is 5 miles long and you can't see the end because it follows the curvature of the earth....

It's weird tho...just think about those numbers for a second....not 100, not 200, nor even 300 but FOUR HUNDRED KILOMETERS PER HOUR.

That's like:
248.548 miles per hour
21872 ft per minute
364 ft per second (that's like a football field and a bit)

For eg: Some handguns fire at 500 ft per second.

Now if Volkswagen could transfer some of that technology into their Golf GTI I would buy one.

Actually, the Veyron's engine is essentially four of VW's 2.0 litre turbo engines fused together.

I hate to think what a Bugatti Veyron gets for gas mileage (which definately means I can't affort one), but at 407 KPH the tank contains 12 minutes of fuel and the tire life is 15 minutes!!

Well, he was halfway through the run when he said that and who is to say that the tank was full when he started? I bet it wasn't because that is a LOT of weight to push to 253 mph.

To put it in perspective: I have a 30' sport cruiser (boat) single 454 . At full throttle (about 50 mph) I burn 3 gallons per mile.

At one point I was looking at an emerson fittipaldi signature 34 scarab that had twin 454's....at full throttle it burned 5 gallons a minute at 85 mph.

For you metric nuts out there a 454 ci is about 7.4 litres

5 gallons a minute!!! My 34 ft motor cruiser uses about 1.5 to 2 gal of diesel per HOUR (Mind you I am only doing about 10 mph but on a 220 gal tank I can do 800 miles)

16 Cycl, 4 turbocharges! Holy crap. It's a beautiful car but I see no point in making cars that fast when it will never go past 50 MPH in daily use.

Well, that's 50 mph if they drive legally. With something that fast no cop would be able to come near to catching you because even most helicopters can't reach those speeds.

But at $2.9 million Canadian it is more a status thing than anything else. MaClaren used to hold the record as the fastest road car, then Bugatti took it. I wonder if MaClaren will try and get it back?

Thanks to Wikipedia the answers to my own questions are: the Bugatti Veyron gets 8 mpg U.S. (30 L/100 km) city, 15 mpg U.S. (16 L/100 km) highway@ 65mph (104 km/h), and answering two questions, at a steady 253 mph (407.5 km/h) 2.1 mpg (115 L/100 km) "it will empty its 100l tank in 12 minutes.":D

Not bad at all. My 1976 T-Bird had V8 double barrel carburator with 460 cc and I got almost 10 mpg, Canadian gallons, lol.

Yeah, I can see the tires flying apart due to the tremendous centrifugal force being applied to them at those speeds....

I also just remembered the part where James states that the engineers went to the F1 testing facility and asked if they could borrow the wind tunnel. Then the F1 guys said sorry, but ours doesn't go that high. LOL

I mean, seriously, a road car that is faster than an F1 race car?

I also like the line: It takes 275 hp to get the car to 150 mph and another 600 hp for the next 100 mph...(or something like that). Amazing how much force the air puts on a vehicle at those speeds. Kind of reminds me of the SR71 Black Bird with it's titanium fuselage. At twice the speed of sound the friction of the air caused the fuselage to almost glow red hot...

Another interesting tidbit about speed: when the space shuttle hits max Q it is traveling at 32,500 ft per second....that's about 3.4 minutes to get from toronto to vancouver.....

Well he was on a test track. Driving conditions don't get any better than that!

It's too bad though - a car like that is probably best enjoyed on a test track. Out in the real world, even in Europe you wouldn't be able to enjoy it fully.

Actually, that's a good point. I will have to see if Top Gear did one of their regular driving reviews on it. I wonder how it corners? I mean, it could be designed just to go FAST like a dragster or a funny car it could corner like a POS (though at 2.9 mill I doubt it DOH).

I saw the review on the MaClaren and even though it hit 240 mph, James said you could still use it to run to the corner store to pick up some milk (and be back before your wife knew you were gone haha).
