Hi, planning to take a week down south (Florida) for a beach type vacation.

Will likely fly down and rent a car for the week.

Want to hang on some nice beaches and take a few day trips to the keys having a central Hotel we can come back to.

Any suggestions for deals or packages given those needs.

Thanks

Key West, Miami, Clearwater, Naples, Sanibel Island...it's hard to go wrong.

The gulf coast beaches are a bit nicer. Staying at clearwater keeps you close to everything around Tampa, Orlando and Miami are short drives away (relatively speaking) and you could go down to the keys and spend a night before returning to CW.

Cocoa beach, worlds largest sex toy shop, Ray Kay's (or whatever his name is) surf shop and Cape Canaveral. Time it right and you might see a launch. I saw a ___ rocket go off from a little bar stuck out in the bay on a wobbly pier and it was freakin awesome.......

The whole Clearwater/St.Petes area is great - fantastic beaches, amazing sunsets and you can get pretty reasonable rentals this time of year - check out http://www.vrbo.com/ for some ideas.

It is not a short drive from Tampa to Miami; it's all day. Driving to Key West from Miami is also a pain as the road is always under construction, it is not freeway, goes through beaucoup little towns with slow speeds and, while not long in miles, it is at least 4 hours each way.

Pick an area; stay there. Miami's a great city that comes alive later in the evening as do most Latin cities. The beaches are fine, not too crowded but it's as humid as the dickens from now till Thanksgiving so be forewarned. Floridians go almost naked during this muggy season; nothing is formal.

And it showers every day around 3 pm.

I suggest in using a car rentals agency's up here first before you go down south. I've had a few family members who came down to visit me while I was in Miami Fl and the rental agency's charged them allot of money to rent a car for a week. One was charging 115.00 per day for a rental.

East of TO
Fort Myers.

Great beaches, close to Naples, easy two hour drive across Alligator Alley to Miami, charter boats that take you to Key West for the day. A couple of hours to Tampa and Orlando

Oh yeah and it is a University town.

International airport, lots of very good golf courses. Decent dining.

I would agree with the idea of a house rental as well. This timeof year and the current real estate market has driven prices down big time

lol I just remembered something that happened when I was in south beach on business.

I was checking into my hotel with my (female) co-worker when a big commotion started in the foyer behind me. My co-worker said holy sh_t....I turned around to look and there were about 100 HOT latinas all dressed in skimpy clothes. My jaw dropped and the checkin lady said: there's a modern dance competition going on and we have the brazilian contingent.

It seems the competition was for 20 - 25 yr olds.

I tell ya, hanging by the pool became THE most important thing on that trip!!!

Hey Dodger

Ft. Meyer is a couple of hours SOUTH od Tampa. It's a couple of hours WEST of Ft. Lauderdale which is 30 minutes NORTH of Miami. How, then, can Tampa be but a couple of hours from Miami? Plane? Yes, including airport time. But not by car. 4 to 6 hours.

Key West is just south enough that it is were coral starts to grow

You can scuba dive it after a 2 day course from most dive shops

4 hours, 20 minutes Tampa to Miami, Google Maps. I was down there this year, south of Tampa, and definitely think it would be over 4 hours based on my travels.

Pick a hotel off South Beach, everything/one comes to South beach only thing is ...it's not really that cheap :)
I definitely agree here.

I lived in South beach on Collins avenue for a while - the beach was the backyard of my building. (what the hell am i doing back here)

Of course there are a lot of hotels you can check into - prehaps if not just for a few days due to its expense.

you will not be disappointed.

Be sure to check out Key West. beautiful drive.

PS - if you find a pair of Oakley Penny Titanium/blue iridium sunglasses on the beach/water there pm me. i lost them in the water! i was smrt. i mean smart. @#$%!!! that hurt.

DR it is...

Well wife won out. Seems she thinks hotels near Miami too expensive so we are heading out to Dominican Republic. Red eye flight too arghh.

So 1 week in the sun (or thunderstorms as far as I could tell).

Plan on drinking a lot of Dominican gasoline and playing some poker.

Too bad. DR is so hit and miss, and activities outside the "resort life" are limited. Florida CAN be tacky, but it can also be wonderful, and it provides a lot more options than just the beach stuff. Still, there are worse problems to have than being "stuck" with a vacation in the islands.....I hope you enjoy yourself.

ps. wuss! get a grip on your woman. lol.
