Personally, I would give it back. The ring is a sign of commitment; if he thought there was going to be no commitment, he probably would not have bought the ring to begin with.

As you are the one thinking of breaking the engagement I would offer to return the ring.

What was the question? You just want to screw over the person that said he love you?

You appear to be a class act, go sell it to Russel "The Cash Man" Oliver.

if your the one ending it you pretty much have to give the ring back

Why am I not surprised by your answer Hunter...

Spanglerdoo... have a sit down chat with the guy, tell him how you feel and offer him the ring back. Depending on his situation, he may not want it back... but at least let him make that choice.

Just my nickles worth.

(oh... and what happened to your sig pic????)

When in doubt tell the truth.

Or, if you are trying to decide what to do, and there are two possible ways to handle something, the hard way is the right way.

I suspect you will not remain friends, but you will always have his respect if you do the right thing. And, you will also have self respect.

I also suspect that if you keep and sell the ring, the money you get from it will not give you any pleasure.

I think the first thing you do is put the ring in his hand and tell him the truth. Cycleguy, Moraff, I think "offering" to return it is the easier softer way and gives Spanglerdoo the opportunity to weasel out of actually returning it.

Spanglerdoo, if you do the right thing here, you will like yourself a lot more in the end.

Just my opinion.

This claim comes up often on Judge Judy and the ring is always returned regardless of who calls it off.
If the woman would not or could not return it the man is awarded a judgment for the cost of the ring, even if he is the one who pulls the plug.

If the marriage only lasts a day then the engagement ring can be kept but if there is no marriage an engagement ring should be returned.

i called off the engagement once - i did not ask for the ring back.
if the woman breaks off the engagment in your circumstance offer the ring back.
decent thing to do.
who knows you still may get back together.

IMHO, if you were married and you split, its yours. If you dump him before the wedding you should offer to return it. Obviously, by you asking here on Terb, you know the right thing to do is to return it. Trust me, you will sleep better knowing you did the right thing. Who knows, he might tell you to keep it.

I actually think contract law comes into place. (or maybe that's in the U.S)

The engagement ring is part of a verbal commitment/contract to go forward and enter into an actual marriage commitment/contract. Ending the commitment/ya same thing here as last two, means not going forward and therefore not having right to the ring.

Any lawyers here know if this in fact is true in Canada?

Either way, go with what pedal plower (cycleguy) said. Seems the best honest and straight forward course of action.

i dont think this is a legal issue.
but it was a gift and u can legally keep it and you dont have to pay tax on it.
gift tax is different in US.

If you had been engaged for many years perhaps there would be some merit in the advice to keep it, but you were only engaged for about 2 months. Price of the ring is irrelevant IMO, he gave you the ring as a pledge of the commitment the two of you made to each other. You are ending that commitment ergo you should return the ring.

Well, maybe I'm wrong....but if the guy's in love and is being told he's not loved by Spanglerdoo he's going to be under a bit of stress and may, in the pain of the moment, say, "keep it", when on sober second thought he may regret doing so.

Returning it right away and not allowing him to say "keep it" is the right thing to do. Taking advantage of his distress is a clear weasel in my opinion.
