I can't believe anyone could dispute peak oil with a straight face. But I agree with you about the automobile.. it's too important to society for us to just give it up.

Although I believe we are past peak oil and no real replacement is in the wings, it is not something that can be proven at this time ---- so sure lots of people can rightly dispute it with a straight face.

I'll add travel agents to the list of endangered species.

It's unwieldy, expensive, and it leaves ink on your hands, not to mention the fact that it's contributing to the destruction of our planet - so why, in the digital age, do we continue to print on paper? If another argument is needed, take that guy on the subway whose newspaper is always strewn across three seats. Get an iPad, buddy!

When the apocalypse comes and the power goes out, printed words will be the only remaining record of the sum of human knowledge. And while tree huggers use their now useless GPS to go hunting in the wooded section of a public parkland for a tofu burger and salad, the true scholars and scientists of the world will form a newer better society that excludes the DNA of deep thinkers who write articles like this.

Whatever. I've been hearing the doomsayers since 1973 and they haven't been right about anything yet.

No you haven't.
Hubbert predicted the US to reach peak oil in the 70's, and it did.
In the 50's or 60's he predicted the world to reach peak oil around 2010.
Right now we are the plateau and proabably starting to decline, so he was pretty darn close back then.

Mankind has been around for a million years. Modern civilization has been around for a hundred thousand years. The car has existed for one and a quarter centuries. I know we love our cars. I love my cars. The way we produce and fuel them right now is not sustainable. But we will prevail with or without them.

Back in 73 they didn't say we are in peak oil, they said it's coming. It's now here (or past). The declining production numbers of existing oil fields, the increased production of dirty sources like the tar sands and even the price of oil are just some easy to see indicators that we're here. Hey, if you wanna believe it's not true please go ahead. Makes it easier for the rest of us to plan for what's coming.

Can't disagree.. I just think that certain societies will try everything they can to keep the car (or at least some sort of personal transportation device) as long as they can.
