Finding Model # of Desktop PC

Morgan Ellis

Bitchy McBitcherson
I have a Sony Vaio desktop PC, and I need to find the exact model number so that I can purchase memory for it.

I've pulled the specs for it:

Pentium R 4 CPU
1400 Mhz
1.4 Ghz 128 MB Ram

I know that I've pulled the model number before, but I just can't remember how to do it...

If you have Windows XP, Run.... msinfo32

</now give me a freebie>

Might work on Win98 as well...

Yeah, and also, you want pc3200, get a gig...and get Kingston. Your rig probably only supports pc2100 (266mhz) ram, but the pc3200 is backward compatible, so if you upgrade ur motherboard later you won't be using obsolete ram (or AS obsolete anyway...depending on if/when you do upgrade).

This 'I need the model number' sounds suspiciously like a salesperson who either :

1. is trying to upsell you
2. doesn't know $#it.

Also, don't buy anything 'computer' from futureshop...they are collectively dumb as a bag of hammers and overpriced.

*sigh* that felt better. Long day at the office.

The specs I've found tell me this model maxes out at 512.

Be kind to me, I'm a software kind of girl - I leave the hardware up to you guys. I do have a motherboard that needs some attention, though...

/entendres...

Seriously, if someone wants to volunteer to install the upgrade, I'd be ever so grateful..

You sound suspiciously like a dumba$$ - oh wait your uneducated post provides the empirical proof - YOU ARE A DUMBA$$.

If you go here http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/mfrmod.asp?root=us you'll see that to actually make sure you get the right Kingston module (you remember Kingston, I think you at least go that part of your recommendation right) you can confirm which modules are compatible by make & model number of the computer. Anyone who tells you that PC3200 or any other memory is:
  1. Guaranteed backwards compatible with your machine (especially a name brand and PARTICULARLY without any idea as to whether your machine is DDR SDRAM or RDRAM - both of which are PC3200 and both of which existed on this generation of P4 BTW)
  2. An investment for the future
Is slightly brighter than the glowing fungus you find on the underside of logs. But only just slightly.

Ahh - THAT felt better. Long day at the office dealing with idjits like you that think because they read PC Magazine & can access the Internet they are qualified to dole out advice on computer hardware.

Morgan - you can also get the model number (M/N...) the old fashioned way by looking at the sticker on the back or underside of the computer that also has the serial number (S/N...) on it. In some cases Kingston also requires the version or series number (an extension of the model number that msinfo32 generally fails to report) and this can almost always be found on the serial number sticker.

You know, this officially qualifies as the most intensely, sexually arousing post I've read in the last six months. I don't have a f*cking clue what most of that meant, but I am moist with lust none the less...

I need a cold shower.

With that said..

Kingston doesn't make memory compatible with my model (I checked already, via their site). Anyone have any other suggestions for make I should go with?

What's your motherboard model? That's the determining factor. Is it Intel?

At the risk of getting a new a**hole bored by Rogie, call the 800 number on Kingston's website, they don't always list available memory under your exact model number.

FYI notebooks are slow, even with loads of memory.
