the hobby needs more capitalism
The problem is that pennies DON'T circulate. People just dump them in a jar and leave them there for years. Most of the pennies that have been produced are being hoarded this way--people don't bother trying to roll them or cash them in because it's a lot of work for what winds up being pocket change.

For the matter nickels are being hoarded as well. I have a big jar full of nickels. When I empty out my pocket change at the end of the day, I toss the pennies and nickels in a jar. I keep the dimes and quarters and will pay for small items with them, but the nickels and pennies are too much weight for too little value.
I have the exact same system.

If it were up to me, coinage would be dimes, start churning out the 50 cent coin, the old voyager dollar coin. Bills as a 5 10 50 and 100

I am not holding my breath.

And there's the give-and-take result of incentivizing a more electronic economy with less cash. It's a very small incentive, yes, but there doesn't need to be a large incentive to have an effect. Debate away as to whether that's a good thing or not.

Copper prices too high...thats the REAL reason!!!!
Pennies are not made of copper any more. They are just copper plated iron. Same as the loonie.

So If I go to the store and I'm supposed to get 1.94 in change - do they give me 1.90 and call it square?

Of course, I imagine that it will take some time to use up all the existing pennies.

I understand rounding.

I just have my doubts that the clerk at the local bakery will.

I'm reminded of the movie Office Space on this one.

Just wait until every business start rounding up all the prices. We'll pay more for everything.
The rounding goes up and down (at least in Australia) - if the final price ends in .01 and .02 it is rounded DOWN...if the final price is .03 or .04 it is rounded UP. Based on statistics no real gain or loss to anyone.

Sorry, but if you're worried about spending up to 4 cents more on some purchase, then you have bigger financial problems and you probably shouldn't be on this board. Seriously, you're complaining about pennies?

Every time I get pennies back from a clerk, I just leave them in the little 'take a penny' thingie. Even nickels and dimes sometimes.

I don't understand why they don't just devalue the dollar by 10:1 or even 100:1. Then the dollar store can go back to being the 'five and dime' or the 'penny arcade' and we can get rid of the heavy loonies & toonies and go back to paper (or plastic) bills. Pretty simple - purchases would either be in 'dollars' or 'new dollars' and just divide by 100.

If we went the 100:1 ratio, we'd finally have 'Two Dollar Hookers' back again! Talk about nostalgia...

Every penny counts. I know tons of people who use those pennies they throw in their own jar at home to pay for their yearly vacations.

I would love to see this, but I don't think the fuckery would be worth it.
