'Midnight's children' - by Salman Rushdie...it won the booker of bookers (prize for best literary book in the last 25 years)...It lived up to expectations and more...

'Love in the time of cholera' - by Gabriel Garcia Marquez...though Marquez won the nobel prize for literature for 'One hundred years of solitute'....I thought 'love in the time of cholera' was better...

'The Trial' - by Franz Kafka...everything he writes deals with the human condition and the absurdity of life...

'WE'- by a russian author that inspired Orwell to write '1984' and Huxley to write 'Brave New World'...

Recommendation

My all time favorite book to date is "The DaVinci Code" by Dan Brown. It's a book of fiction, based on fact. I couldn't put it down!

Dan Brown is a great author. He writes about mysteries surrounding the Illuminati, Holy Grail, etc. You learn alot about history- but it's far from boring.

My favorite is "Cities of the Plain" by Cormac McCarthy.

This is a great western novel, and is an easy read. It is a period piece for sure, but very descriptive, similar to some Hemingway stuff. I highly recommend it to those who like western movies, or outdoors. It is very descriptive of travelling in the Texas and northern Mexico areas.

Actually for Hemingway I like a long 3 part novel called Islands in the Stream. It basically covers a mans life from college age to old man, and shows his endurance to survive.

Both of these books are about being a man, enduring, and having honour (for your friends, for your women).

I couldn't agree more regarding In the Time of Chloera. It was definitely a better read than 100 years of Solitude.
...how can you not love Florentino Ariza, who burns with unrequitted love and waits over 50 yrs for the love of his live...of course...it helps that he had over 550 affairs while waiting....

I enjoyed 'Paula' the most out of any of Isabella Allende's works

anyway, welcome to the board kristen...

I'd have to say "Watchers" by Dean Koontz ( some others spelled his name incorrectly ) is one of my favourites. Also Marrion Zimmer Bradley is very good. Really there are so many authors that are entertaining it's difficult for me to narrow it down...these are just a couple that I have always enjoyed. Lightning by Dean Koontz is also very good...

Cheers!

For entertaniment, I agree with Zorba. I was a big James Clavell fan back in the 80's. For inspiration, Atlas Shrugged is my all time favourate novel. Should be read by every card carrying pinko socialist and bleeding heart Liberal.

Although most people are most familiar with the "Dune" series by Frank Herbert, my favorite book is "The White Plague" by Mr. Herbert - it's a chilling look at what could happen with these days of Genertic Engineering - what would happen if you wiped out almost the entire female population of the entire world?

Chilling thought eh guys?
