For what it is worth, I'll present a contrary point of view. I was the type of kid that could have been bullied in school, but wasn't because I got an education on how to avoid the whole scene, with my mouth and not with my fists.

I once had a guy twice my size pile on me and throw two punches, one in my arm and one in my abdomen that hurt a fair bit - but I did not fight back. Instead I said "Well, you've got me where you want me - finish me off." Though I was scared shitless that he would, just as I was taught he said "Aren't you going to fight back?" I calmly said "No". He said "You're no fun", and off he came.

Another time someone else said "I'm going to get you in the parking lot after school tomorrow." I simply said "Thanks for telling me when and where NOT to be. If you'd like to beat me up, let's make an appointment we can both keep" and I pulled out my appointment book. By next year, this guy and I were actually somewhat friendly.

Given my experience, I think the amount of time given to both suspensions speaks volumes for what the school thought about was actually in the right. My belief is that most bullying can be prevented without violence, and I think the older and bigger boy could have just walked away. The fact is the bully is acting like a coward - courage, humility and understanding will easily deflate the situation.
I've seen that approach and it has been ineffectual 100% of the time. You would have got punched in the mouth for being "smart" with the bully. Walking away always results in more taunting. Reasonableness always results in more taunting. The only way to get a bully off you is if you humiliate him for his stupidity in front of the people he is trying to impress, and even then there's a 50/50 chance he'll drop you to shut you up. Unless you are only talking about physical violence, then I guess acting like a ragdoll might spare you from that.

I love how school's operate. They allow bullying to happen, then are surprised and horrified when someone snaps back.

If I had to go through school again, I'd do things differently. The moment anyone gave me a dirty look or said anything remotely off, let along hit me, I'd try to kill them. Just charge them and pound away untill we get pulled apart.

Keep in mind I didn't go to gangsta schools with gangs and weapons. I also had a good size and hight advantage.

I would of had gone through much less bullshit in life if fellow students figured fucking with me would result in a beating in the worst case situation, or having to put me down like a rabid dog in the best case situation. The one time I did stand up for myself and ended up knocking someone out, I was left alone for a month. A few more beatings and that would of been it.

........... WTF is with this whole mindset?
H'bout this mindset......

I regularly beat on (in a play fight sorta way) Steph's son. It's taken almost two years but I've transformed him from somewhat of a suck to a tough little cookie...as my elder brother did to me. Steph and the rest of family would protest from time to time but I kept at it anyway. When challenged as to what benefit would come from it I simple explained that one day sooner or later he will run into a bully, possible while with a girl and I'd rather him handle the situation like a man than run and cry like a coward. They weren't comfortable with my methods but agreed that I was probably right.

So the big day comes about 3 weeks ago, he's walking home from school with his little gf and a bully heads them off. It's the girls older brother (2 years older). It started off by him throwing snow balls, when he was asked to stop he started pushing, shoving and threatening. My little student took his shit for a while, then asked him to stop again. When he didn't comply, he slammed him to the ground and packed snow in his mouth. :D

The now in tears bully ran home and told his mommy that a boy smaller and younger beat him up.

Guess how it ends???? Mom forbids her daughter from having any association with Steph's son...nice eh?

I taught him another life lesson right after, it went something like this...."You're better off, she's going to end up just like her mother anyway."

It's truly unfortunate, but rhuarc29 is spot on.

Bullies have learned that there are no consequences for their actions. Decades of young ones being told to walk away from a fight have given bullies carte blanche to do as they see fit.

The only thing that seems to work is when the bully realizes that there are consequences to his/her actions. And if the consequences mean a body slam onto concrete, then so be it.

Bullies thrive wherever authority is weak

I believe what works on the personal level also works on an international level. You don't let individuals walk all over you, and you don't let dictators do it either, either internally or exernally. Yu don't 'walk away' from the Hitlers of this world: you OPPOSE.

That's what I like about our society: we raise a ruckus about everything, that's healthy and prevents totalitarianism.

Nothing IMO could be further from the truth than "War is never the answer".. Sometimes war is PRECISELY the answer.

Stupidity is eternal.

After Casey took his best punches, the runt should have backed off instead of dancing like the prison beyach he will inevitably become. I hope Casey ended up with the girl at the end of the clip.

In public school nothing changes; I still remember the time I snapped back. I was sitting in the principal's office with my broken nose bleeding copiously. My injury was left unattended while he permanently suspended me from his school; told me that my family would pay for the braces I shattered and called me a filthy wop.

Of course, after I told my dad what had happened, he invited the arsewipe to come to the house and attempt to collect.

The dental bill was never paid.

I don't understand you. You say I "WOULD" have gotten punched, but I didn't get punched. The two times this happened, I stood up with courage. You say it's 100% ineffectual, yet I used it to avoid a fight. How can you say I would have gotten punched, when I didn't. In both instances, this worked exactly how I was TAUGHT how to handle bullies. Hold my ground, don't panic, realize they're the scared ones and don't fight back. The first guy was a textbook case when he said "You're no fun". It is exactly what I learned.

Though I have never learned it, what amazes me is that those who train in martial arts are always told to AVOID a fight as opposed to looking for one even when one is staring them in the face. That's what I did. It showed courage, and with the second guy it showed wit. That's all it took for me.
lol this is just as lame as the advice to not do anything. Instead tell someone (ie. a teacher) because kids being bullied know how well that works lol.

Although I've never been bullied, I observed it plenty of times growing up.

Congrats. I remember watching a story about a gay kid who was beaten up daily and ridiculed. He eventually committed suicide. He was much smaller than the other kids. I could never grasp why nobody helped him specifically his parents (in this case his mom and stepdad) when he told them of the constant abuse. Your parents have to be in your corner, not simply tell you to complain to teachers. If I had a kid who I know was incapable of defending himself who was constantly bullied, I'd personally go to the school with my kid, tell him to point out all the bullies, and one by one I'd put my hand around the neck of each kid and tell them if they ever fucked with my son again, I'd kill them. They would never bother my son again.

Teachers, parents, are all inept. The victim in this video should not be suspended. He should be given a medal.

[Facebook users numbering in the hundreds] triumphant response to the older boy's retaliation surprised seasoned experts.

"Our first reaction is obviously one of distress. That is a very distressing video for a number of reasons," John Dalgleish, head of research at Kids Helpline and Boys Town, says.

...It is understood the Year 10 student is a victim of repeated bullying at Chifley College's Dunheved Campus, a middle school in a disadvantaged part of western Sydney.

But police and bullying experts are concerned by the video's publication on Facebook and the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the older boy's retaliation against his attacker.

"We don't believe that violence is ever the answer," Mr Dalgleish says. "We believe there are other ways that children can manage this."
LOL these are the kinds of "experts" society is brimming with nowadays. I think it's a product of feminist attitudes that took over in the past 20 years.

The video isn't distressing and violence sometimes IS the answer, on the playground, and in the world of the big boys.

the "by the books" school responses are what our society wants. in the interest of multiculturalism, we accept all kinds of bad behavior. i think bullies should be thrown out of school. so should drug dealers. that's why private schools exist. cause everybody knows that to learn, you must have control. but we also know who would be thrown out the most. poor folk. so everybody has to suffer so they don't feel bad.

This video actually made the news.

And every "expert" I've seen so far who have spoken against the video simply don't seem to understand what happened.

First off , this was not one kid picking on the other, if you listen to the audio and watch the video, there are more than one child who are verbally egging on the brat.

The kid who was the victim literally had his back against the wall, and as he was outnumbered he had nowhere to go, in fact as soon as he was given a safe exit ( after the body slam and the young women in the background who pushed away one of the other kids who came to stare him down) he did just that , he walked away.

They also don't bother to mention after the bodyslam, he made no further attempt to hurt that kid, he simply stood back in a defensive posture until given a chance to safely walk away.

It's easy and correct to say violence isn't the answer , but when you are being verbally teased, outnumbered, and have been physcially assaulted, conflict resolution techniques have to be thrown out the door until one's own safety is gained.

I've witnessed bullying far more than twice. My neighbour was one year younger than me and I played some basketball on occasion with him. He was majorly picked on, mostly by kids in my own grade. We went to a small public school that frequently had joint grade classes. He (and others) followed your approach for years. Eventually he got a second chance in high school and took the no bullshit approach. Even his old tormenters backed off when they saw he pushed back.

Sorry for the grammar. By "you", I meant whoever is being bullied. In my experience, your methods were 100% ineffectual. I'd be very confident in saying your case is the exception, not the rule.

I don't doubt that there's more to the story than is shown in the video, but in the video the bully got what he deserved. Even if the other kid had been taunting him earlier he could have and should have simply walked away. He didn't, and he got owned. Fair enough.

On the other hand it's pretty rough on a 12 year old kid to be demonized on the internet by millions of people, and I don't think that is really fair. Despite his mistake he is still just a kid, and it's interesting and useful to contemplate how harmful it is for a 12 year old kid to be made into a world-wide figure of fun.
