I'm sure you've all herd the radio ads/propaganda against Verizon getting into our market. How do you all feel about it? Do you buy into these ads? I know I sure don't. Look who's sponsoring these relentless ads - Scroll down to the very bottom.
"Brought to you by your Canadian Wireless Companies, Bell, Rogers and TELUS."
they just lost all credibility! Of course the big 3 don't want Verizon in our market, duh! They're the only ones who stand to lose (An end to the monopoly).
It's great for Canadians who are tired of being gouged by the big three. i for one gladly welcome Verizon!! Along with Cell service I hope they bring cable TV and Internet offerings.

What do you all think?

Well Canada seems to allow selling our Steel Plants to US companies and then having all the jobs transferred to the US. Not to mention making it very difficult for our farmers - and then importing food.

These mobile and cable providers have been screwing us for years. I get irate when I hear their adds. First they rip us off with over priced mobile and cable charges and mysterious extra Charges on our bills. They do this for years. Then they try and use their adds as if they're protecting us from the evil Americans. Well HELLO!!?? Where the fucking where they when free trade took hold and the factories and middle class jobs were going away. Oh yah. They were scamming us with there overpriced services. 20 years ago when I started with Rogers they were awesome. Delivered a replacement phone to my house on a Sunday night when my first cell phone quit. Now they're the exact opposite. Scam me every chance they get. And there's only three of them right??? Collusion for sure. So of course they're trying to change our minds about having another competitor in the market. I say FUCK them. Let's get some European telecom providers here as well.
FUCK ROGERS, FUCK BELL, FUCK TELUS.!!!!!!!!!!

The telecoms are just the current whipping boys of the Harperites. As I mentioned before, do you think there is competition in airlines, wine, dairy products, railroads, etc.? Why do people drive to Buffalo and book flights with American Airlines? Why do Canadians do cross-border shopping?

Do you actually think that the Euros and Americans love you so much that they will bend to your every wish? If the Euros and the Americans want in, then let them build their own infrastructure and not get first and second spectrum choices before the Canadians are allowed to bid.

Employees of these three have had to deal with having their jobs outsourced to another country so why are these companies raising the flag now? If the big three want access to employees in other countries with reduced pay then why can't international companies open shop in the big threes country? Companies push globalization onto the workforce so let the companies compete in an unprotected globalized market here in canada.
I don't think Verizon will rock the boat too much since if they simply play along with the big three they can make good profits also. The big three learned this early so Verizon will be a quick learner, make a big splash then once they get their market share they will join the big three to keep rates high.

While I am not apologizing for the incumbents, if people actually read what they are saying they have a very good point.
They would welcome competition, but on a level playing field. The circumstances of Verizon's entry to the Canadian market are far from level.

Verizon would be a great addition to the Canadian marketplace under the correct circumstances... still think it is kinda weird that their main advertising tag was a guy with a cellphone saying 'Can you hear me now?'

Unfortunately, the unwashed masses aren't as smart as you and the Harperites are playing them to the hilt.

I am certainly not opposed to lower prices, but not sure what the Government is driving is fair competition. Allowing Verizon to take advantage of rules established for small upstart Wireless providers makes no sense. Verizon is larger than the 3 combined and yet they will not be required to build their own network, existing providers forced to allow the new guy to use their towers. In the US Verizon is not cheaper than Canadian rates, given zero infrastructure costs, perhaps they can be in Canada. I worry about job loss at all 3 and I also question where Verizon profits would be invested, not likely here where where they have no network to improve........it sounds like a sweet deal for Verizon, but makes me wonder that being the case how great a deal it can be for Canadians

I have a friend that just moved to the U.S., cell, home phone, cable and internet $99.00 a month without bullshit limits. We've been getting hosed forever. Fuck Rogers and Bell.

I heard of that ShareEverything plan (http://www.verizonwireless.com/wcms/consumer/explore/choosing-a-plan.html) but is that rate:
  • Introductory i.e. valid for specific time before the actual rates kick in
  • regional-specific
Plus that link is light in terms of specifics too.
That being said, Verizon is just as customer-friendly as the big three.

Allow me to be blunt. Almost everything is cheaper in the U.S. It is simple economics. The U.S. has "economy of scale" (e.g. why do you think Verizon larger than Rogers, Bell and Telus combined?), the U.S. has lower taxes, the U.S. has less bully unions, etc., etc.

Have you seen the price of milk in Buffalo compared to Toronto?

The ads are carefully crafted to appeal to every emotional response of a typical Canadian. Envy, entitlement, patriotism etc.

But they are so full of shit.

They say the network was "paid for by Canadian taxpayers". Suggesting that the networks were built with taxes. I suppose that since cell phone users pay taxes, it is technically true. But it is dishonest.

Any new entrant to the market will pay to use these networks and have to contribute towards future capital expenditures to improve the networks.

This is the very same argument Ma Bell made when other companies were allowed to buy wholesale use of the underutilized copper networks and resell to consumers. Without this competition like Acanac, Tek Savvy etc etc. we'd still be stuck to Bell and their previously high rates.

Bell and Rogers are doing quite well for their shareholders. Who are the ONLY parties that matter to them. Not Canadians. They offshore every single job they can, wothout any regard to Canadian jobs.

They will continue to do well, or better, with Verizon as a competitor.

The Harper Gov't is of the opinion that Canadian consumers will be better served in the long run by this international competition and that Bell, Rogers and Telus will survive and thrive.

Ya Laughed when I saw, "protecting CDN jobs" really? Because I always seem to have to ask for someone in Canada who actually speaks English when I call.

Rogers call centres are in Canada and if the agent speaks with an accent, it is because we are a diversified country composed of many ethnic groups who don't all speak the "King's English". I started a thread about this a while back.

Been thinking about this for awhile. Yes heard the ads.
I understand on one hand what the idea is, to bring in a cell phone company that may offer lower rates.
On the other hand they should not be allowed to exclusively buy up smaller Canadian companies and then use our network.
