I know a couple of people I know told me they were banned from Facebook for promoting their adult industry sites. And I for sure untill today have never seen any ads for adult biz sites etc.

Recently I noticed there are groups/fan pages for escorts... and then today saw an actual ad for

Facebook needs to be shutdown. It only survives by infringing content, much like Google, YouTube, Linkled (whatever), Twitter and others. So many people are out of work by the existance of these cheating companies.

You can set your facebook security to limit what people see. Most people do not know how to change their privacy settings. I cannot see most profiles without the owner accepting my friend request. I can pretty much look at anyone's friend list.

I don't think they're security features are that great. I mean, I don't want to be seen by a friend of a friend of a friend, but not sure if it's that fullproof.

Then people send you invites to certain applications (tell them I"m your relative, yet does that mean, everybody will see me?), which may expose you to unknown people.
Canada's Privacy Commissioner agrees and has given facebook a month to respond. It will be interesting to see what they do.

Profit vs. privacy: Ottawa takes on social media giant for violating Canada's laws
KARIM BARDEESY

Canada is striking at the heart of social media's revenue model, ordering global giant Facebook to limit the personal information it gives to companies that make add-on programs for the site or face potential court action.

Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart ruled that Facebook had failed to adequately respond to four "well-founded" allegations about its practices that contravene federal privacy law.

She wants Facebook to disclose only the information necessary for the add-on programs to function. Currently, users must consent to share all information except for their contact information if they want to add one of the programs, such as interactive games that attract millions of players.

Facebook forbids the software developers who create the add-ons to keep information they don't use, but that policy is hard to enforce.

The Privacy Commissioner also asked for better disclosure, transparency or protection around deactivating and deleting accounts; handling the accounts of users who have died; and collecting the personal information of non-users.

"It's clear that privacy issues are top of mind for Facebook, and yet we found serious privacy gaps in the way the site operates," Ms. Stoddart said.

I don't understand why any reputable service in the adult industry would promote on a site whose demographic caters to 13 years old and up.

A well known agency here on TERB contacted an EXQ lady under her REAL name. It floored both me and HER as neither of us knew how they knew her real name! Very strange stuff.

I hear what you are saying...

However when Facebook first started it was aimed at the younger set. I don't know what the stats are now but I have noted that there is an abundance of adults on there now.

The way the ads on the right of the page work btw is that Facebook keeps track of what groups you join and other activities ... then it programs itself to show you ads according to your personal activities.

If kids for example are joining a lot of skateboarding groups etc... they will see ads for sporting goods stores... things like that.

I belong to some groups that advocate for changes to laws etc re the adult industry and have been posting on them recently... I suspect that's why that ad suddenly came up for me.

On the subject of Facebook security, it is very easy to get someones password in facebook so beware. One major issue is they don't use and SSL security to encrypt the data stream so all userids and passwords fly in clear text across the internet. Not only that, every piece of TEXT is also visible while sniffing the pipe. No, sniffing the pipe is not a sexual perversion so don't get a woody.

I will leave it at that because I don't want to promote the idea of hacking people's Facebook accounts but give me 10 minutes and I can pull 100s of IDs/Passwords....

GREAT THREAD NITE HAWK!!!
I didn't realize there was so much chatter about FACEBOOK... I recently added my profile to the site... with it's privacy settings ON,(no one can look at my page without me accepting them as a friend 1st) since really the intent is another way to stay connected with clients.

I can see where people are concerned with teenagers, more-so the younger one's being on the site accessing adult information. Facebook actually does not allow minors on their site, they are unable to sign up an account.
This site, really is an adult site, since if you've seen some of their applications...it's really ADULT geared. I believe if facebook is violating Canadian laws, as it appears they may be doing... then I am the first to say… FIX IT or STOP IT!

To not allow adult content, on a site that is geared towards all, when we are living in a society where we have freedom of speech and choice would be absurd. Parents should be present when their "children" are surfing the net...or utilizing any application, since they can come across many things... including advertising for agencies’ /sites etc. Teenagers’ are more informed then what we would like to believe.
To filter content would be no different then censorship. To not allow our content, would mean that there is something wrong with what we do… and for me…I am not ashamed of this industry, since it provides more to society than what the misinformed… believe it to provide.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this situation… and thanks again NITE HAWK… for posting it!!

SEE YOU AT YOUR PARTY!!! Xox
