Face masks may be inadvertently giving people Covid-19 immunity and making them get less sick from the virus, academics have suggested in one of the most respected medical journals in the world.

The commentary, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, advances the unproven but promising theory that universal face mask wearing might be helping to reduce the severity of the virus and ensuring that a greater proportion of new infections are asymptomatic.

If this hypothesis is borne out, the academics argue, then universal mask-wearing could become a form of variolation (inoculation) that would generate immunity and “thereby slow the spread of the virus in the United States and elsewhere” as the world awaits a vaccine.

The "unproven but promising theory" will be proven true the day that pigs fly.

They'll stop at nothing to compel people to wear silly masks.

Don't quote tabloids and 3rd party accounts
That is NOT at all what is even being proposed
(also will point out this "theory" was floated back in JULY and no other researcher has backed it so I dont know why its being posted now we are almost into October)

The actual theory is at simplest terms; if you breath in less quantity of the virus, your sickness level will be less severe
But nowhere do they even hint at "giving immunity"

Scientists research all sorts of things and media makes money by making things sound extreme. If people took the time to read (instead of claiming conspiracy theories) t's not really about masks but rather a small amount of virus that can enter the mouth, nose, or airways.

I could see the scientific sense but I have a feeling that the number of cases where the viral load was enough to trigger the immune system without a full-on infection would be pretty small.

You should read it yourself. They believe the presence of a small number of viral particles could trigger an immune response without infection taking hold. That would produce anti-bodies.

But the New England Journal of Medicine accepted to publish it. That's a good stamp to start with. And the UK Telegraph a tabloid???

A bit more credible than TeeJay's post and theory published anonymously on Terb :ROFLMAO:

You need very substantial evidence for such a substantial claim. It is counter to all logic and sense.

No the New England Journal did NOT publish it
(if they did as you claim by all means link it up; only talk I can find online is the SCHOOL paper researcher attended over in Cali)

You guys really have to stop falling into this #FakeNews trap
If a 3rd party tabloid makes an outlandish claim with NO SOURCE or not even attempting to link to a source it just ain't true

And yes the UK is known for having horrible journalism
Far worse than USA or Canada by quite a margin

And as mentioned above you guys are discussing the relevance of a theory posted months ago
If it had any credible results you would have heard about this by now

Infecting a person with a virus and hoping for a less severe response by immune system is not equal to immunity
Infecting multitudes of mask wearers with a virus & mask use resulting in many of them having a less severe response (and or not ending up in the hospital, ICU, or dying) relative to non mask use is equal to immunity relative to them staying home alone hiding under the bed waiting for a vaccine that may never come.

"As SARS-CoV-2 continues its global spread, it’s possible that one of the pillars of Covid-19 pandemic control — universal facial masking — might help reduce the severity of disease and ensure that a greater proportion of new infections are asymptomatic. If this hypothesis is borne out, universal masking could become a form of “variolation” that would generate immunity and thereby slow the spread of the virus in the United States and elsewhere, as we await a vaccine.
