Just got a call from my best friend's wife. They have been married just over 14 months, I've known him over 45 years.

Cancer.

He is one month and three days older than me.

We went to the same public school, same high school and even the same university.

He hates doctors and kept refusing to book an appointment to see what was wrong. I hope that they have caught it early enough.

Cancer's not about age. Sympathies though.

In a very dark place
Cancer ( depends on type) is no longer an automatic death sentence.

There are always options.

Attitude is everything.

Best wishes

Compromised, I am sorry to hear this news. Best wishes, your friend will be in my prayers. Doctors suck these days. I have dealt with some lousy ones recently myself.

Just to clarify on my last note. I dont mean all doctors suck. But I certainly have had some bad luck with doctors as of late myself so I can understand how your friend would hate doctors.

Pneumonia saved a life!

My brother 59 caught pneumonia, saved his life. Found early stages of lung cancer. Fortunately it did not enter the lymph nods! Had 1/4 of his left lung removed recently. Is now recovering If he waited a year it may have been too late. he doged a bullet.

alternative?

Whenever I go see my aunt in the retirement home she always gives me these words of advice: "Whatever you do, don't get old". I think she's telling me to off myself. Nice lady.

No offense Thighspy but attitude does help with dealing with a tough illness like cancer - there's no need to say that optimism and positive words are ignorant. Whether the Compromised's friend receives treatment that only slows down the progression of the disease, depends on his optimism and positive mind set to go through his alternatives. Does it not? :) Extending life is better than giving up and cutting it short now IMHO - and I'm sure that this individual's family would be more than glad to spend that extra time with him.

I am sorry to hear what has happened. I wish your friend and his family all the best.

Clinical trials are clear: There is no relationship between an optimistic outlook and the course of a disease.

Oddly enough, though it may sound counter-intuitive, that's good. It removes the potential stigma of losing the battle with such a disease because, "he/she just wasn't positive enough/didn't believe in themselves enough."

Those same studies are also clear that those who maintain positive relationships and a healthy, realistic outlook enjoy what's left of their life better than those who don't.

See Cancer is a word, not a sentence. Brilliant stuff by Toronto oncologist Robert Buckman.

I have a cugina (female cousin) who is a genuine man magnet. She is as exuberant as she is gorgeous; she skydived and suba dived in The Great Barrier Reef. She has the world at her feet; a handsome husband and two beautifull children. Recently she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy. Luck is still with her, the tumour was benign.

Comprimised you have my regards and I hope your friend conquers his cancer and lives another 30 years.

I think you mean that the cancer had not spread.

If it was benign (harmless) they would not have done a mastectomy.

He is not a smoker, other than a few joints when we were in school.

Gastointestinal Carcinoid Tumor. Damn thing is playing havoc with his hormone levels.

From what his wife has said, I don't think it has metastasized

I'm not sure how you can say I am ignorant in this area.

I've been through Cancer hell myself and I feel attitude was everything, in the sense that without the will to beat the farkin thing, nothing else would do any good. A positive outlook goes a long way.

I am also uncertain as to what qualifications you have simply by having been a contributor to a research facility. I've given plenty of money to the Heart and Stroke people but that doesn't mean I can claim some encyclopeadic knowledge. Choose your words carefully.

I've read and heard of studies that show much the oppositez: That those who were prayed for had higher survival rates.

The connection may be far from straightforward. However, it is still interesting.
