I used to be all no-name brands, whichever is cheapest until 1 trip overseas. My suitcase was falling apart mid-trip, just like the luggage commerical with clothes coming out of the conveyor belt instead of the suitcase.

Even since then I understand spend a bit more for the good quality - brands that last.

baltimoron, we shop at same stores, except don't have computer bag, my carry-on is an American Tourister.
LOL. Yeah, I've had luggage come apart on me. That's when I stopped using luggage from Target and Wal-Mart  , and finally got some Samsonite cases.

I went through American Tourister stuff before, and the carry-on stuff lasts, but I had some large check-in size American Tourister stuff that broke though.

Samsonite will last you long. But it isn't very stylish, so to speak. Tumi luggage is really good for style and stamina. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for when buying Tumi luggage. IMHO Tumi is the best in terms of travel luggage, regardless if it is a one day bag, one week case, or even a garment bag, Tumi is my first choice.

As for status symbols, give me the a chick with a knapsack any day .. I couldn't tolerate being with someone who placed much value on such superficialities, which I suppose makes me superficial ... I could appreciate someone who bought a "knock off" or a bargain at Value Village ( just think of the historical mystery attribute ) and was aware of the humor in conforming to play the game.

That being said, the last jacket I bought was an authentic 'Alpha Industries' :þ

To each their own ... otherwise life would be [more] boring
But yet, many are obsessed with 'keeping up with the Jones'. Whether it's cars, suits, watches, bags, shoes, house, appliances, you name it.

IMO, nothing wrong with knowing the value of the name brand items. Know that they last and easy servicability are good plus. Name brand goods can be good goals or rewards, as motivation for this [more] boring life. As long as one is not obsessed with them. Everything in moderation, imo.

P.S.: Many cute chicks with knapsack...
Value Village reminds me of the old Bargain Harolds and Biways. I still have the $5 turtlenecks.

And I wear a Timex to be different!

Date, my philosophy is clothes and our 'worldly goods' do not make a person, it's what's inside that counts. As when we are 6 ft under, none of these things matter. If we don't get the appropiate attention, its saleperson's loss.

I wouldn't get any service if MPA judge me by the way I dress at MPs.

I tag along to the high-end shopping outings for the entertainment value as I like observing people.
I totally agree with you. There was a recent interview with Kanye West one of the most stylish guys out there he said that it's the person that makes the clothes and not the other way around. But at the same time he also noted that "packaging oneself" was also important cause if you don't even know what to wear, how are people going to respect you in your activities (in his case, being a rap artist and producer he probably meant that if his colleagues can't even dress properly, which is an indication of style, there music is probabaly going be like shit). And to a certain extent it's kind of true. P.Diddy, Jay-Z, Pharrell Williams ... they are all stylish guys ...

And finally yeah, I go for entertaiment too. Somtimes I like to dress up really nice in the morning for work with brand names from head to toe (maybe because I had a really nice sleep). LOL ... then I'd head to a trendy store and act like a total fucking snob ... LOL ... there are other occasionas where I dress like shit and head to these stores and pretend to not having seen money before ... LOL ... the reaction on the salesperson face is totally different. Somtimes, when you deal with salespeople, you just have act like an asshole ... LOL ...

One time, I headed to Harry's looking like shit. I asked the salesperson about the Burberry Blue Label scarf that they had on display. He showed it to me in a very rude manner etc. etc. thinking I probably can't afford it. It was listed at $298 plus tax, after taxes it was lke $342 ... even when I was paying he acted like and asshole. Then, when I pulled out my AE Platinum his attitude totally changed cause he knows that with his paycheck he can't get a Platinum ...

But yeah, this trendy stores shows you how important packaging oneself is somtimes and how artificial, realist and materialist our society is.

All in all, I ain't a brand name slut ... but occasionally I will buy something nice for myself. I wear it cause I think it looks nice not because I think others will think I will look nice in it. And finally, it's true ... expensive shit really does last longer. My daddy bought a set of LV goods, wallet, card holder with keychain 15 years ago and it's still good as new. The only defection is the zipper on the card hold/keychain, but that's it. He went back to LV and they said they'd replace the zipper for free. Now, his card holder/keychain was purchased for about $400 15 years ago. If you divide the cost up yearly, it is a pretty good deal factoring in the superior service and free replacements ...

... so, somtimes, paying a bit more for an established brand pays off. This is especially true for automobiles, watches, etc. etc. cause good shit will hold their value.

I love it when that happens. I do that too. Sometimes I'll go into a store wearing a suit and tie after work. They treat me like a million bucks, constantly following me around asking me dumb questions and kissing ass. Then I'll return on a Sunday afternoon in sweatpants or a track suit and the service is night and day. Then when I pay I pull out the creadit card and you can see the expression on their face change. And then my file account pops up and they can see my purchase history in their fucking store. Wooo...then their like, "Oh you have shopped with us before Mr. PHNINE..." BTW, PHNINE is my real name...LOL Fucking pricks. It just goes to prove the point that you can never judge a book by its cover.

One more thing, the people that really have money in this world are nice and polite. The people that only have some money and think they are rich are the ones that are assholes. Old money is always nice oppose to new money so to speak.

True true ... one time I saw Ken Thompson grab a cab on Bloor and he was very polite, etc. etc. Another time I was in the same sauna as him and we talked a bit. I pretend I didn't know who he really was and he was really nice ... or maybe because he knows he's a public figure and is just "acting" ... LOL ...

But on the whole, I agree with you. Old money peeps are always nice and polite cause they were brought up that way. It's the nouveau riche that are assholes ... LOL ...

Or, just compare the folks who live in the Yorkville area and the folks on Bayview and Lawrence. The Yorkville folks are always nice, the Bayview boys (nouveau riche) are snobbish, etc. etc.

Yup totally agree. Old money is when the money is in the family and will be there for a while. New money is when a guy gets a promotion and maybe gets his first six figure salary year. New money is new...no savings...LOL Old money is money over seas and money saved away. Funny how it works...LOL

I didn't mean to pass any judgment that there is, goodtime. After all, when it is all said and done it's the whole package that makes a person and the sum of those parts are such a varied collage. It was just a passing comment seeing as I was replying to DM anyway, but my point was that I generally find it hard to be around someone who puts too much emphasis on such things, considering all the crap in the world and things of more value we fail to see. I was specifically thinking of a relationship. I certainly understand the need for escape and motivation given society's structure and life does go on.

In the end though, all people are fascinating, even the Jones's. I do admit I tend to have an anti-snob snobbery and a rebellious nature toward conformity that I have to stay aware of at times. But, is there really such thing as non conformity. I no more like someone who judges a person because they wear an Armani, than I do someone who looks down on someone who shops at Wal Mart. I think we know each other well enough to realise we have a similar view, but just experience it from different positions within the spectrum - it's the same though.

Absolutely, if there can be an absolute (heheh).

Everything in moderation, imo.
Exactly, although extremes can be a good thing in order to gauge where that moderation might lie.

The new luxury is time off. Anybody can work 80 hours a week and buy an Armani suit, but what the hell for? If you can go on a 3 week vacation down south unreachable and have a very comfortable lifestyle on a 25 hour work week, now that is luxury.

If I understand correctly, one of Nietzsche's main point was not to conform. And by conforming, we are like the lower animals. So yeah, when everyone is buying LV, I will buy a Zeller's in-house brand. When everyone drives Mercedes, I will buy Lada ... LOL ... cause I am too cool to be with those animals cause I need to become what I am ... tee hee ...

PS - pool, yor last comment was very snobby in nature and detest that!

Paradigm all the way - MADE IN FUCKING CANADA with craftsmen drinking Canadian when they put the speaker together!!! HAHA ... do you want your speakers to be made by some drunk big bellied Canadian guy?!?!?! :p If not, then you have to buy something like Bose! It's engineered and designed in America by guys with PhD's in physics and Made in Mexico by guys drunk on tequila!!!

It makes no sense to spend a lot of money on super high end stereos becuse as we get older (30s, 40s, 50s) we loose our capability to hear those really high and low frequencies (you know the ones you pay big dollars for).

High end equipment isn't so much about high and low frequencies...

...as it is about dynamic range. It’s a hard concept to explain, but most people can "hear" it. It is the difference you hear when you wonder why some radio stations (usually classical and jazz) "sound" so much better, beyond just musical tastes, than others (usually rock and pop). Typically, your "better" radio stations don't "compress" their signal...almost all pop / rock stations do.

Or...an example people might be more familiar with is why CDs sound better than the radio. There are no "pops" and "clicks" and "scratches" on the radio...they play CDs. And while yes, the high and low end on radio isn't as good as a CD played on an even decent stereo (anything better than a boom box), as you pointed out, much of that can't be heard anyway.

The difference is the dynamic range. Dynamic range is what makes live music sound so special...even when it is quietly played in a piano bar.

THAT is what you get when you pay big bucks for stereo equipment.

I have never...and I have tested it...met someone who couldn't appreciate the sound out of true high fidelity equipment. Most people are just simply amazed...even if they can't justify the price.

Actually, I watch the shoppers instead. I just accompany friends and observe other shoppers' behaviours. I try not to take it out on salepeople as many are often under-paid and ill-treated. Knew a few Harry's girls in my time...It's only when they get rude then I guess what you and asn are referring to.

Life is interesting

That's the beauty of Terb. We can express differ viewpoints.
Pool, as usual, we agree on so much more than written.

I had the feeling this may bring up that memory, sorry. But life is about memories and relationships. Good or bad, life experiences.

I too practice non-conformity. Occassionally fool myself into thinking I'm "trend-setter" but it really doesn't matter. I just prefer to be more relax with life and not follow or caught up with class values and practices. Indeed, different position in the spectrum - same conclusions.

In the end, I'm mortal. I too crave and own few name brands, pricey items, just not handbags... Guess we all agree we recognize price & quality. A motivation to reward ourselves in this otherwise boring life.

Materialistic?

In terms of ladies being materialistic, even holy man may be tempted with designer brands.
