I believe in what Madame de Stael said..........."in life one must choose between boredom and suffering".
I guess i'm an existentialist because i'm always wondering why i'm here and what is the purpose of life? Death lies at the end of every road.

If you are interested in existentialism then I definitely recommend it. Sometimes I wonder about it, but I would rather just live and enjoy my life then think about such things.

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Is skydiving suffering? Is discovering something new about nature suffering?

A lot of people ask that question at some point or another. That alone doesn't make you an existentialist. It's actually a fairly nebulous branch of philosophy that encompasses many different ideas, but colloquial existentialism is the position that meaning and purpose are neither absolute nor externally imposed. You make your own meaning. You give your life your own purpose, and what you choose is just as valid as any other suggested purpose, because it results from your own existence.

I personally believe that the question itself is silly. Why must life have a purpose? What exactly do you mean by "meaning", and why would your idea of meaning be preferable to any other (or even the absence of meaning)? Why can't we be content to just eat, sleep, and fuck to our hearts' content?

Because those things alone are not enough for some people!
Okay, then sample new initiatives to see what fills that void in your psyche. Commit yourself to learning as much about the Universe as is humanly possible. Or work on curing cancer. Revolutionize education. Live completely alone in a mountainside hut, venturing outside only to hunt game and bring back potable water. Meditate 10 hours a day for 10 years.

IMO, Madame de Stael is a bit of a wanker.

She's the one who said: The more I see of men the more I like dogs.

But she also said: The desire of the man is for the woman, but the desire of the woman is for the desire of the man - which does have some philosophical punch to it.

The First Law of Philosophy: For every philosopher, there exists an equal and opposite philosopher.

The Second Law of Philosophy: They're both wrong.

What's the meaning of life? I guess it is whatever you make it. As a youngster, I always thought when you grow older you get life figured out. I think the opposite is true. I am finding you get it figured out less and less, but you learn to go with it.

ummm.... i thought being an existentialist meant living in the moment, having no regrets about anything in the past, doing whatever makes you happy. Contrary to what some of you are saying, it requires the least amount of thinking... just doing it and moving on

best book on existentialism i've read so far "Le Stranger - Albert Camus
