Update: The federal Justice Minister has now requested that Craigslist pull the erotic services ads from their Canadian sites.

I guess it is good politics but it is surely nothing more than that. In the US, as has been pointed out on multiple occasions, prostitution, in and of itself, is illegal in many states. Craigslist likely pulled the ads because of a legitimate fear of being prosecuted under some offence akin to aiding and abbetting in prostitution. In Canada, prostitution, and hence the services advertised under the Erotic Services section of CL are perfectly legal. What I really have a hard time with is the fact that the Toronto Sun, Eye and Now have all had ads largely equivalent to what is on Craigslist for years and no one has complained.
I think it is something to be concerned about. If the governments (fed and prov) succeed in convincing CL to pull the ads (note there is no mention of any threat of criminal charges or regulatory prosecutions because there is no basis for any such actions) why would they stop at CL? Why would they not target this board and any other like it that are equally, if not more, explicit as CL?
As I said, I understand that it is good politics but to say that because CL pulled the ads in the USA, it should also pull them here is simply intellectually dishonest because of the two completely different legal regimes in play.
